Turns out Snow Leopard really was more than meets the eye. Hidden under a terminal command is a beautifully animated ‘List view’, which is almost like a better ‘Fan’. It’s a little less utilitarian and takes up more space (which is why Apple must have been hesitant to enable it by default), but for those who don’t mind a little space wasted for the betterment of user interface, this is a must try hack.
Fire away Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app):
Enter:
defaults write com.apple.dock use-new-list-stack -bool YES
then
killall Dock
…and your list view should be transformed into the new beauty. To turn off this new list view and go back to the old school view, simply replace YES with NO in the above command, and redo the process.
Hope you like it!

Thanks! Cool Tips!
I using it now!
Just plain uggly and useless
Hitting +/- changes icon size, doesn’t work on Grid view though.
Thanks! Awesome tip! Is there anyway to make it bigger so that the icons can actually be seen?
Just wondering how this differs to Leopard’s “list” view?
Yes it’s followed almost every other element in Snow Leopard to the HUD style but any chance of a video to show the animation? I’m running a G5 so can’t install Snow Leopard but I didn’t upgrade to Leopard before they implemented the list style.
Strange that it now requires a terminal command though…
This screwed my Dock up badly the first time I tried it, but now it works beautifully. I love it.
How do I go back to he default list view?
^^ Simply replace “YES” at the end of the string with “NO” and run the command again.
Trying to do something like this for ages, thanks very much!!!!
Apparently this doesn’t seem to work on my 10.6.2 version. Did they disable it? I tried using Secrets aswell and that didn’t work either.
I’m on OS 10.6.6 and it doesn’t seem to be working..
I know this is an old article and all…but…
This menu *looks* nicer, but it’s missing the flyouts which made the old list view much more useful.
