A little Tip: Conversations in Mail

by Milind Alvares on September 4, 2008

Everyone who has used Gmail has found the conversations feature to be one of the best ways to browse through the hundreds of emails that come through everyday. Moving to a desktop client, on the other hand, presents email in the old school way, one after the other.

Except for Mail. By default, Apple’s Mail client will colour any similar emails light blue, when any one of those messages is selected. A little known extension to this feature is that there is a threaded conversations view (View > Organise by thread). This will group similar messages into a single thread, much in the same way as Gmail does it. And all this is done use some super slick animation effects! However, unlike Gmail, it excludes any messages that you have sent in that threaded group.

But that’s not the end of it. Since each reply is marked and linked to any message, clicking on that button (screenshot 3) will bring up your reply in a new window. And if you do want your sent messages displayed in the thread, then Command+click “Sent Messages” in the sidebar and then select a thread. (Thanks to Daveed for this one)

A little warning though: Threading your emails might make the blue tint, now all over, a little overwhelming. Just open up the Mail Preferences (Command+,) and in the viewing tab you will be able to change the colour using the default Apple Color Palette. Changing the colour to a light shade of blue, as seen in the screenshots, is much easier on the eyes.

(Note: Those emails you see in the screenshot were for that purpose only. I don’t usually flood my inbox with self praises.)

Great time man! I wonder when me.com will also get this nice little feature. Makes filing long conversations so much easier. seriously, thanks!

If you want to see your replies in the thread-groups, just make sure the “Sent” box is also selected (i.e., Cmd-click the Sent mailbox). I always have a viewer open with Inbox and Sent both selected, and when I file away a thread, I include my sent messages that way.

Thank you daveed! That’s a nice suggestion!

Create a smart mailbox - add two rules to include mails from the inbox and sent messages. Keep that selected, then ⇧⌘M to hide the mailboxes sidebar.

I say the comments are more informative than the post itself (no disrespect Mr poster, it is a nice tip).

That’s a really nice suggestion Aditya, but somehow it feels a little weird so I reverted back to having the sidebar (helps in filing those SA emails). But the Smart Mailbox shall stay. :)

This has been there forever, but I find the regular view more useful. Or just put the sender in the spotlight field.

Want a real tip? Check the menus when you get a program and you won’t be surprised to find out about features years later. ;-) Try each menu, there aren’t mroe than a couple dozen selections usually. It only takes a few minutes do evaluate software this way.

In reply to Brian, I have been using Mail ever since I got my Macbook, and not once did I notice this. Sometimes Apple’s applications are so simple that you don’t bother checking what’s under the hood and end up missing out on some great features.

Nice website btw. Came here through MacSurfer.

I agree with Brian. This is hardly a tip.

Oh! great feature! after a recent unbelievably long email conversation much more fit for IM, I remembered you had talked about this and came back to just pay my respects!

The issue I have is that I like a clean inbox. With the Sent folder selected I get all my sent messages along with the few inbox emails I have. Really I want to be able to see the whole conversation when I choose a particular email in my archive folder. I’ve tried different Smart Mailboxes but can’t seem to get it right.
