Techspansion discontinues Visualhub, and shuts down for good

by Milind Alvares on October 4, 2008

There are some things you don’t expect to happen. You don’t expect to ever win the lottery, or expect Steve Jobs to ever not be the CEO of Apple. You don’t expect the Zune to ever be a success, not Steve Balmer to ever talk sense. But every once in a way events occur, that take everyone by surprise. I am sad to report, that Techspansion has shut down for good.

…After much soul-searching (it’s not you, it’s me), for personal reasons, Techspansion is closing its virtual doors. The Support Forum and Support E-mail will be available for a while longer to take care of any remaining issues for you.

Techspansion brought into this world the splendid Visualhub, iSquint and more recently, Audialhub. Visualhub, for those of you who are new to this game, is (was?) arguably the best video converter on the Mac, and hence, on the planet. With presets for just about anything, converting video didn’t require a PhD to operate. Audialhub followed the same principal, only for audio. I am an extensive user of both these apps, and finding out that they won’t progress further has left a void in me.

Alas, things happen, and we have to move on. This may trigger some new talent into making an even better app. For those who have already purchased Visualhub, keep it safe, at least until a suitable alternative presents itself.

Did you use Visualhub for your video conversion needs? With no certain future for this app, are you prepared to move on to something else, or just cling on to what’s left of it?

Hell…. I’m a fan of them since I’ve tested v1 (early version).

Love it like you’ve said, no need for PhD to operate thing like video conversion.

Why someone buy the source code then make it alive again…

Oh man that is really sad, VisualHub and AudialHub are my favorite mac apps after Transmission and Coda. I can’t imagine a day without using either of them. Lets hope this happens for good and we get to see a great new app in the future. Or do we already have one in the QuickTime Pro ??
QTP if fantastic in everything it does, it takes some time to convert video but the quality of the converted video is kick ass.

WTF! Visualhub was, and still is, my favourite video converter. I just hope he sells the code to some other company and keeps on the legacy of the app.

Btw, what will you be telling us soon?

Visualhub going away being a sad thing aside, I hope you guys are changing your theme (in reference to the SA 2.0 banner). The current one looks so plain and boring. Keep up the amazing articles though. :P

oh yeah Mr Ballmer was talking sense!

He wants Apple to stop the closed system and this proprietary hardware and software thingy…and come out to the open ground and play with the big boys like big boys do…then MS will go for the kill and vanish Apple away from the face of the planet…coz apple has no idea how to play open!

Apple success is on their bisnes strategy..
~make few prouducts,
~create hype,
~sell them to few people,
~have a little market share
~stay alive.

video formats and codecs move on so unless someone takes up the batton it will start to get less and less useful. Oh dear
