Chill Pill is a desktop application for Shaun Inman’s Fever RSS Reader. I’m not going to go into details about Fever, other than it is an awesome RSS Reader, and it is what converted me to RSS.

Chill Pill allows you to enjoy Fever’s rich RSS experience while taking advantage of Cocoa and all of the other modern technologies in Mac OS X.

Chill Pill is somewhat like running Fever in a Fluid.app, only it has slightly more features. (All about creating ‘site specific browsers with Fluid‘)

Chill Pill will notify you when feeds are updated, and allow you to set it as the default RSS reader. But what makes Chill Pill stand out is the ability to modify its look. You can create your own Chill Pill style with just a little CSS knowledge. Users are also asked to share their custom created styles on the Conceited Software forums. There aren’t any styles submitted as of right now, but it should pick up soon.

Available now, Chill Pill requires at least 10.5, but is Snow Leopard compatible. And it’s free.

It´s a good app, I’m using right now. The only thing I’m missing is the feedlet, but I think the fact that it can be set as the default RSS reader, makes for it.

Great blog, BTW ;)

Carlos,

Hi, I’m the main Chill Pill developer. What about the feedlet are you missing? You are able to use existing feedlet without modification. Chill Pill utilizes the feedlet when integrating into Mac OS X as the default RSS reader.

Fever sure looks nice (and so does the Chill Pill desktop app) — but 30$ *and* having to run your own server just to keep track of your news…?! Uhm, I don’t know…

Phil Olin

Yeah, $30 is a little much on for an RSS reader if you don’t already have hosting. but if you already have a server for hosting then it isn’t too bad.

I’d use Fever (along with Chill Pill) in a heartbeat if I had a proper internet connection. It’s really a complete RSS reader that makes sense of all the redundancy floating around the interwebs (I hope we’re not adding much to that). Plus to have your feeds somewhere up on the cloud, wherever you go, is worth it.

You can use the cheapest of web servers which won’t cost you more than a couple of $$ a year.

Nicholas, my bad. The feedlet works as usual, I’ve using Chill Pill al day and it’s whats Fever needed. Thanks!

Now, Fever is the best RSS reader. It keep me updated with things that matters to me. It’s worth the 30 bucks.

I can set Fever as my default RSS reader by running it through Fluid App. I am a bit confused besides the Growl alert and the CSS styling what chill pill offers. Its super simple to setup and works well. Just a different alternative to fluidapp?

Phil Olin

@Chad, Yes, Chill Pill is an alternative to running it in Fluid.app, it just has a few more features.

@Chad
If you set up Fever as your default RSS reader in a Fluid.app installation, you cannot add feeds to it directly from a site since it does not make use of the feedlet of Fever.

ChillPill on the other hand, does.

I wish someone would make a windows version of this for the poor people.
