Mac OS X has the best interface in the world. Working with multiple applications, Expose, Spaces, and all the ever present menubar just makes working on so many things so easy. But in the midst of all this multi tasking it is hard to find peace and quiet, required to write a good essay or blog post. Writeroom from Hog Bay Software, a very simple, yet powerful application, attempts to clear the clutter and leave you fully concentrated on text, and just text.

No distractions, no formatting worries, no shiny buttons. Just text. So let’s see how that works out for us.
On launch, the screen goes black, and all you see is a bright green flashing cursor, a remnant of the primitive monitor. That’s it. There’s no other options to fiddle around with, or any buttons to twiddle. Just write.
Of course, they wouldn’t just leave you stranded like that with green text on black. Move your mouse button to the bottom and the document info such as word count show up. Moving to the top brings up the menubar, which has a few formatting options, very similar to those found in TextEdit. The preferences however are loaded with options.
Writeroom is all about the preferences.
Going through all of the preferences might take a while, but it is totally worth it in the end. The preferences are a little unorganised, with the general tab sporting some preferences that should be in the fullscreen mode, but its not a bother. In any case, the developer has reorganised the preferences in the yet to be released 3.0 version.
For myself, the first thing I changed was the bright green colour (what where they thinking!) to a sober white. I also changed the page background to a dull grey leaving the window background full black. This provides some nice contrast to the text while not hitting the eyes. I also added some margins to keep the text from touching the sides of the page.
There are lots of options there that allow you to customise your fonts, page size, and even a point where your document begins to scroll up (like a typewriter). Very useful if you don’t want to bend your head in awkward positions while writing. There is also an AutoSave option that makes a backup every 5 seconds!
That’s it for WriteRoom as an application by itself. But the real fun starts when the Edit in Writeroom plugin is enabled. Unfortunately, the plugin doesn’t work in Leopard, so you will need to use a third party plugin QuickCursor, which essentially does the same thing, so no worries there.
What the plugin does, is it allows you to edit any text in any Cocoa application like Safari, TextEdit or Mail, using WriteRoom as your editor. Confused? Say you are working on an important email and would like to do away with the clutter. Just hit the shortcut key and WriteRoom loads in with the text copied from Mail. You then write the entire email, and hit save. On closing the WriteRoom window, Mail will already be ready with the edited text. (The only difference between the Edit in WriteRoom and QuickCursor plugin is the latter puts a button in your menubar instead of having a shortcut key.)
WriteRoom.iPhone
To extend the WriteRoom experience, Hog Bay Software also makes an iPhone version. Although it isn’t exactly as powerful as the desktop version, the iPhone version is very solid. For one it supports both portrait and landscape modes for easier typing. Second, you can compose and send to Mail, and third, edit your documents using Safari on a Mac!
The developers warn that the share feature is unsecure so anyone on the network can access your documents so do not enable this when you are working on sensitive documents (in an unsecured wifi network). All you need to do is enable document sharing in WriteRoom.iPhone (its only the first button in the entire interface), then go to Safari on the Mac, and in the Bonjour bookmarks, your iPhone will show. To show your Bonjour bookmarks in Safari, go to the Bookmarks tab in Safari and enable Bonjour bookmarks from there.
You can edit the colour and font settings on the iPhone from the iPhone settings option, although don’t expect customisability like that of the desktop version. The desktop web interface is very well done, with the look and feel of an actual iPhone. However, I would have preferred it if the iPhone version somehow integrates better with the desktop version. Quickcursor does the job, but only so much.
WriteRoom.iPhone [iTunes link] costs $5, but doing so gives you a $5 off the price of the desktop version of the software, which in turn makes it free! Of course, make sure you get the iPhone version before the desktop version.
What WriteRoom is not.
WriteRoom is not a text editor or a page layout application. It’s intended use should not involve writing code or editing HTML. You should also not expect to be able to write a novel with this application as there are no organisational features. This is purely for writing, writing, and more writing.
At $25 for a single user license, WriteRoom isn’t the cheapest application, but performs a very specific function and excels in doing so. Download the 30-day trial to see whether this application fits into your workflow.

My perfect scenario for writing a good essay is me sitting in a la-Z-boy chair with warm cup of coffee on one side, some cookies on the other. I’m outside watching the horizon as the sun sets, slowly getting cooler but still comfortably warm. and silence.
My ideal scenario is using Pages with iTunes playing some relaxing instrumental music in the background with the visualizer running. I prefer the room to be cold, but not too cold. Perhaps somewhere between 66˚ and 70˚F. The weather should be rainy, so I’m not – oh, you were probably talking computer-wise, huh?
Of course, this is likely to change if I win the contest.
My perfect scenario for writing a nice long drawn rumination would be sitting on the beach, MacBook Air in hand, iPhone layed down on a soft cloth away from the sand, and of course, Writeroom ready and waiting for my words to flow…
(I know it’s random, but I have a feeling I’m gonna win this one for my splendid performance!)
Great review btw. I have only used WR a long time back, and dismissed it as something of little value. Now I so want to win this contest
My perfect scenario is not a place or state of mind, but rather having a quick, focus-friendly writing companion that will be ready for my idea, and not its funeral, awaiting in my bag, along with my jazz-loaded ipod. Such ammunition will allow me to write comfy at the balcon, on the cotton net from Ceará that my wife gave me, with a Starbucks´ thermal mug carrying a España motif all over it, topped up with dark, bitter coffee.
ok, so long for this plot as I lost that mug inside a movie theatre. Hope I win that license so I can sell some books and get back to Madrid to buy myself a new one
my ideal scenario for writing is a clean desk, a soft warm light, and writeroom in fullscreen mode on my MacBook. Yeah. Am already a user of this awesome app.
You can count me out of the contest btw as I have no use for a second copy.
What is your perfect scenario for writing a good essay?
Humnnn… me sitting in my old chair, watching the blank screen, thinking, maybe dreaming a little, and the rain rolling down the window… perfect!
Looks like a really nice app. My best place for writing is late at night, when no one is disturbing. Coffee should be flowing, and of course, iMac + Leopard. If I win, Writeroom might take the place of Textedit, which I currently use.
My perfect writing scenario is a warm room with a comfortable chair at a good level compared to the desk. An external monitor set at my eye height. External keyboard and mouse for my aging PowerBook. The desk would be my cherry desk that my grandfather inherited from his father and is now my own. Lighting would be indirect and warm. Coffee would be sitting in my thermos after being pressed in my metal Frieling french press, having just the right amount of cream and sugar on hand. The mug would be the one my wife got me when we were traveling in Korea. The dogs would have been taken outside already, the child fast asleep, and the wife happily engrossed in her MythTV’d episodes of Sex and The City or some such.
Then I could put on my headphones and listen to some classical music and pound away at the keys- quietly of course.

That would be heaven, but for reality:
I would be sitting on a cot in a tent shared by approximately 20 other guys and the air conditioning freezing my fingers. My back would be aching from sitting here on this cot for what seems like forever writing a small blurb for one of my new favorite blogs! Go Smoking Apples go!!!
Thanks for the amazing answers guys! Never expected them to be so detailed. With replies like these the devs might just give everyone a license to the app
@El Heffe: Thanks for the awesome compliment! I’ll speak to the randomizer and see if I can get you an extra chance at winning this thing
My perfect scenario for writing an essay is in a ergonomical chair, with a new Apple keyboard and a two 23″ or 24″ monitor, one in landscape, one turned to portrait (90º).
Indirect, backlit lighting. 74º. Cold Water. Organic Red Wine & Chai Tea (in separate cups). Oh yea, and some doughnuts. (hey, it’s my ideal).
Some Phish in the background, shoes off. And the words just flow.
Oooh a giveaway! Lovely!
My take on writing would be: After my afternoon nap, just a little bit hungry to nibble on stuff, some Doors playing on my iPhone, a Mac (and this is the most important), and until now, Pages. I’ve downloaded the trial of WriteRoom and it sure looks like an app that can replace Pages. So here’s to me winning the lottery.
Liam.
The perfect Scenario…
Since thinking is a bodily function, I would sit down to write the essay after a long quite walk or after a whole night of philosophizing with a friend. At that point I would sit back on my armchair, not comfort for me, I tend to fall sleep easily, and first lean back and look at the ceiling for a couple of minutes, in complete silence. After thinking, turn on some instrumental jazz or depending on the essay a different kind of instrumental music, Apocaliptica is nice when it comes to radical subjects. And either a very cold beer (not with the ends of getting drunk) or a big bottle of water and a big glass filled with ice. Dim light and preferably in the early morning, when the brain is working fastest! After… nice feeling of accomplishment.
I think my bed. With a MacBook on my lap and a coffee near me, the morning, no much noise out but some cars in the street
I wish this kind of technology was available back in the day. I still remember lugging around my 40 pound knapsack and cursing having to systematically organize my writing material before I could even start an essay. Now, I envy those who can bring their MacBook and iPhone to a Starbucks and write to their hearts content. These days, you dont need a paper and pen anymore… If only I had an iPhone and WriteRoom…. the possibilities are endless.
My perfect scenario for writing a good essay is certainly NOT anything like posting in some comment box of a blog in the hope of winning a giveaway. The truth is it’s late, I am tortuously laying sideways on a bed with needles in my left arm facing a loud laptop with a killing glare in the upper right corner of the screen while typing with my right hand. I’m of course therefore ineffective at relieving the itch on my behind. The situation is dire and let’s not forget also that the outside world is too loud.
I am French and I need a proper ROOM to WRITE.
For what IS the perfect scenario, dear reader, just let your imagination run wild…
For me writing is a simple task, which I can do anywhere, and any time. I’m a technical writer so I don’t need to have any imaginative thoughts. I’ve been using Scrivener on my MacBook Pro, and have so far been happy with it. WriteRoom does look good though and might help me get those wordy pieces out quick. Downloading the demo and hope to win the contest
Perfection would be… Late at night, in bed, with my laptop in my lap… A big mug of coffee and some chocolate chip cookies to munch on, random brain fodder and my iPod playing the playlist of the moment..
*now wishing i was home and not here behind my desk at work*
Thank you everyone for participating. Loved the replies.
The winner is Dan. Although randomly picked, he seems to be the deserving winner!
HEY, I’m writing to confirm my email don’t know what to do… please tell me what to do… Thanks again and very happy to have won the license!!! I love SMOKING APPLES!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!
I was wondering why you didn’t reply. Congrats. Will get you your license as soon as possible.
And thanks for commenting. You guys rock!
It’s this mild hyper-awareness that pops into your head. “I need to write…don’t wait!”. Often I am not at a desk-instead, I am driving, walking from school-you may know what I mean. If I can, I stop and write on my ipod touch. The thoughts are coming so fast. Everything blurs around me. I am writing and writing and getting a great sense that it was good that I stopped to write. I then walk away from this ubiquitous-capture exercise and think what will I have for dinner.
