Hi,

Today I sentence the rip of Coda in my mac.
I used the software for 2 years and I get annoying with issues that happen along the way, errors of upload. Long time to connect using Remote Access, and the lack of use local and remote at same time.
Your article make I decide myself. I had already a bought version of Espresso from those Mac Bundles. I agree with you that Coda is a good software, but also I agree that they should work more on update versions of it. When update changes are not so different and the work flow is not better improved, same errors with upload happen since the first version of it.

Thanks for your good article.

Best regards,
Ruben Nascimento

I'm also a big fan of Espresso. I've used for several large web projects now. It does a lot but feels really light--both from its snappy performance and its minimal UI. The feature that can automatically upload any document on save is really, really handy. That obviously seems risky for production, but If you have multiple FTP locations set up, a pulldown menu lets you set which location to use for the auto-upload. So I set it for my staging server and then use the publish feature once things are ready for production. I can't imagine my workflow without it.

OK, so I've been using Espresso now for several months, and I've really grown to love this app. Some of the best parts about it are the navigation pane, as Matt just mentioned. Not only is it visually very easy to look at, but man is it simply and handy.

Also like the way it handles Projects, and setting up a the "quick-save" that automagically uploads to your FTP when you hit Save on your local file, if you have a server set up for the Project.

The best to me, though, is code coloring. I'm sure it sounds quite vain, but man I just love how it colors code in the soft blues and reds.

I've also switched from using Filezilla to Transmit 4, for FTP where I don't want to use Espresso's built in quick-save feature.

Hey, thanks for the great comparison. Last night i was very happy that i'd made the switch from Aptana to Coda. This morning, after reading your post i've installed Espresso - and OMG - Espresso is simply amazing. I absolutely love the navigator panel on the right hand side - makes navigating through very long, very complex classes incredibly fast. FTP integration is kinda fantastic to. I'll be dropping my version of CaptainFTP.

I'd recommend the following combo for LAMP development:
Espresso + Cornerstone (for SVN)

I've been working for a while now on Coda, but wasn't totally happy with it. My only reason to stay with Coda was the ability to upload files via FTP easily.
After reading your article, specially the sentence: "But with Espresso, I can work on files locally, but still have them saved to the web at the same time. A single command triggers two actions." I've made the decision and switched to Espresso. I've only been 2 days with it, but I'm already loving it. Reminds me of coda, but improved.

Good article!

I've been flip flopping between Coda and Espresso for many months and to be honest neither one completely satisfies me. They're both fantastic programs but, in a nutshell, I find Espresso is still buggy and still has a beta feel. Coda, on the other hand, feels long in the tooth. Sometimes the frustration I feel with these programs drives me back to Textmate which of course eventually leads me back to Coda or Espresso, or worse... Dreamweaver.

Perhaps I just want it all. Perhaps I just cannot be satisfied. But whatever the case, I am glad that Espresso is here. Hopefully the competition between the two programs will improve both worlds.
