I bought Fontcase ("family pack") and have installed it on two Macs. The layout is perfect: I can see all the fonts in a folder or set with a preview, without having to first select them. It just makes looking for a font faster while I'm designing. They have that down better than the other font utilities. Seems like such a simple thing but it does take a lot of experience designing with fonts to know how to handle this. I have thousands of fonts.

I do this: create an alphabetical list of folders to organize fonts by name, then a list of "Genre" folders ("Art Nouveau," "Punk," etc.) by dragging them in to those from the alphabetical folders.

It's nice for that...BUT...Fontcase is basically unusable in its present state for me, because it crashes repeatedly, and it's ability to maintain font activation is subpar, as is on April 12, 2009. I am hoping the developers will get around to making it as sophisticated as it looks. But as it is now, I am going back to Linotype Explorer (the older, free version, which seems to work really well...Just missing the list of font previews).

From what I've been reading tonight, Fontcase looks really good. I just downloaded and installed it. I've been going back and forth between Suitcase Fusion 2 and Linotype Font Explorer X for some time now, and neither of them is really as good as they should be. And I don't care about auto activation. I work in graphic design, prepress and web design and switch between jobs using tons of fonts all day, and I'd rather just manually activate the sets I need. Fontcase's website and the application interface are stunning. It's about time someone got it right. I'm going to give it a spin. If it works as well as it looks, I will be telling everyone.

@Milind: Ok, since I've been getting pressure from many fronts on this (other sites have been featuring Fontcase) I think I'll go and download myself a trial.

I'm usually an early adopter to new apps... but I've been reluctant to change my font managment ways. I'll give it a go, though and see if it blows my mind as you suggest in the trackback article below.

@Spigot: Fontcase has left the beta stage and is a 1.0 app. Check out this press release in the trackbacks below these comments (review coming soon I hear)

I'll wait until it's out of beta to make a final judgement, but the lack of automatic activation for apps like InDesign and Illustrator make it a no-go for me.

I've been using the free (for now) FontExplorer X for a few years now with almost no font management related problems. It'll be hard to convince me to change that workflow.

Looks damn good. I don't think I want to pay for a font app though so I hope it is priced well (looking at it I don't think it will be anything below $30 though). Font book is good enough for most of us anyway.

Wow! This app looks superb! Font Book is great n all (compared to windows fonts! Ha!) but this one really takes font management to the next level. I've taken a look at suitcare and some others, but their UIs are so yuck. Fontcase, I want the beta!
