I’m a staunch supporter of Things on Mac and iPhone. It’s less involved than Omnifocus, and has more options and features than the standard to-do apps you come across in droves on iPhone. I love being able to manage projects, tags, and areas of responsibility; fully embracing the GTD way of doing things. But I know this isn’t for everyone. I’ve tried to get my mom to use a Things-style way of organizing her work stuff for nearly a year now, to no avail. As far as electronic task management goes, she’s still way behind a lot of us.

I’ve been seeing a lot of an app called Put Things Off in the app store lately. I didn’t put it together right away, but I realized that the guy who does the blog, Put Things Off, had made an iPhone app. I knew just by looking at screenshots that this wasn’t going to be for me. But if you think Things and Omnifocus are too much for you (price and complexity-wise), Put Things Off might be for you. The goal of PTO isn’t to manage your whole life. You’re not getting an overarching system here. You’re getting a simple, yet functional to-do tracker, with basic management abilities.

So what does PTO have? You get four panes: Inbox, Today, Put Off, and Done. That’s it. No projects, tags, or areas of responsibility. Any time you hit the plus button in the top right-hand corner, your to-do gets dumped into the inbox. From there you can file it as a “Today” action, or put it off. That’s it. “Today” actions can be put off or completed. “Put Off” actions can be moved to “Today” or completed. “Done” actions can be moved back to “Today” or deleted. And by this point, you’ve pretty much reached the end of PTO’s capabilities. If you’re staring at your browser window in disgust already, move along. This app ain’t for you. If you’re thinking, “Wow, that’s pretty simple!” You might be in PTO’s target audience.

The next version of PTO will add a badge to the Home screen and fix some minor bugs, and later versions will include email export, auto-delete of old completed items, push notifications, and a possible web or desktop client. The developer told me he intends to keep any future “advanced” options turned off by default, leaving the app defaults as simple and basic as possible. And even though I won’t be using PTO to manage my tasks, I admire his vision. It’s a well-made app that does the basics well, and doesn’t ever feel awkward or difficult to use.

This isn’t to say it’s perfect, however. I’m not the only one on the net that isn’t thrilled with the “70’s station wagon” aesthetics. I’m pretty sure Clark W. Griswold was the art director on the app, and couldn’t stop staring at the family truckster while he was designing all the app’s art assets. I would love to have a different theme for the app; one with just a solid color for the task trays and background. It would be cleaner and less distracting. Aside from that, I don’t have any complaints about Put Things Off. There’s no sense in wishing for more features; because that’s not its purpose. And like we learned from The Matrix trilogy, everything has a purpose. So no, I’m not recommending it to everyone because I use Put Things Off—I don’t. I still love Things, and will continue to use. But should you just need a simple to-do system, and aren’t managing a bazillion tasks like I am, Put Things Off could very well suit your needs. You can download it from the App Store for $2.99.

I need this to remind myself when I need to write and upload articles to a certain web site. I have several done, just keep forgetting to upload them……….

Luke

I currently use Things, but half of the tasks I have on it are reminders to learn how to use it. So, maybe, Put Things Off is the app for me.

Conrad Gempf

I need this for my emotional health. Currently I put things off by ignoring them. If I can put them off by tapping an area on a slick user interface… wow! That’s progress!

Chris

Wow, now I have an excuse to be an organized procrastinator!

I need PTO on my iPhone because I’ve used every other “to do” type app available for the iPhone and they all… Suck? (Things and the Appagio app work well but they’re pricy for iPhone apps). Basicly, I want to use this app to organize the hudreds of todo items I have at work, to be more productive, and for the thrill of victory. Thanks!

I desperately need it, because I don’t get things done at all. I think there is no more un-organized person on earth than I am. But when doing nothing I of course have a bad conscience. Put things off – would help me to get organized and feel good while putting things off, because I know, I will do them in the future.

I could use a to do app on my iPhone because The Hit List doesn’t have one, yet. :-)

Rolly

I need the app to remind me that I really don’t need an iPhone, not even if they used a service provider that could be accessed beyond the limits of urbania.

Useless bling really.

I am the Ultimate PTO’er. Unlike Rolly, I love my iPhone. I am constantly checking it for email, messages, surfing, etc. But as much as I love my iPhone I don’t use it to remind me to do things. I am constantly forgetting to do things like pay my credit card bills on time. Currently I have to attach Post it’s to my keys so that I won’t forget to do something. I need this app.

I am currently using Todo on my iPhone to keep track of assignments for school. I have been contemplating getting Put Things Off for a while though because it seems like it might tailor to my procrastination a bit more.

Things and Omnifocus are great list/project managers but all I need is something simple, elegant, with a touch of flair. Put Things Off fits that bill to a “t”. And it sounds if the developer knows their target market very well and will keep the app simple and basic. Thanks for the heads up on this.

Couldn’t wait for the giveaway. I just purchased this app and am loving it. Todo simply has too many features for me. This is a very simple distraction free way of reminding yourself of tasks.

tried things, tried everyTHING but this seems like the one approach i haven’t tried! and since i buy apps almost 1 a day, a free one would be a blessing!

I need this to help me organize my busy life. Between movie shoots to common reminders of things to pick up at the store this looks like the app for me.

Thanks for the lovely review, guys. As the developer, I just wanted to let you all know that I’ll be slowly adding new features (but keeping it simple) in the next few point releases.

For v2.0, I have a major overhaul of the look and feel of the app that’s currently underway, which you’ll be pleased to hear is a grand departure from the ‘station wagon’ look!

I’ve got no Iphone… but, I ‘ve got a friend who is an amazing person but totally disorganized and messy, and he’s got an iphone. What a wonderful present for him

Vinod

Interesting Review. I would love to use PTO as I am getting less things done these days with others.

nice app, but I recently found ,,Plan” app. It’s even more simple and quick to use. It tries to guess events time, all tasks is in one simple view, works with built in calendar and also sync with google web calendar. brillinat :)
