“Not another notes app!” was my first thought seeing the name. Little did I realise the app has almost nothing to do with notes. In fact, I’ve been dreaming of this app for a long time now; so glad someone finally decided to make it.
NoteTote is download manager like no other.
Very often you want to download a file, but you can’t do it on the computer you’re currently surfing on either because it’s at a friend’s place, office, or it’s not your fastest connection. Other times your device doesn’t allow you to download files or even if you have some app that can download a file, it’s not ideal. Fill in your ideal scenario where you need to download a file on a computer you’re not presently at.
NoteTote is a little utility that will monitor a text file on the Simplenote server for any download links you might add to it. It works on such a crude level, that you can’t go wrong with it. It’s just text!
After entering your simplenote credentials, NoteTote will create a new simplenote document ready to accept data. Just paste in a url to whatever file you want downloaded. NoteTote will intercept that url, and initiate a download on your Mac. Notetote suggests using the app in conjunction with Hazel, to automatically queue torrents, move files to your dropbox, or add files to iTunes. I’d rather have seen some simple text based tagging feature instead of having to depend on a third party utility, but that’s certainly a working solution.
NoteTote costs $4.99 at the Mac App Store. I can’t tell you enough; go buy this app. For those on the fence, you can even download a trial version good for ten runs, from the NoteTote site (glad to see a developer offering trials).

I think it may be a powerful tool for some. But since when to you need to queue a regular download?
I can’t remember a situation when I would really have used this tool.
If I have to wait for something with my internet connection, then it’s some torrents. And for that I prefer the Dropbox + Watchfolder chain to accomplish this task.
From anywhere in the world, I’ll just put a .torrent file into my dropbox watchfolder and at home this file is being synchronized. As soon it is there on the home computer, Transmission will start the download.
Anyway, besides I’m not interested in NoteTote myself, the review is good, short and describes the product well.
Cheers, Lukas
Can anyone tell me if this, or any other program can be adapted to remotely download megaupload or rapidshare links? I have a premium account, but jDownloader doesn’t have a web interface like Transmission or SABnzbd+ does, which makes it impossible to remotely download something.
I think you should google for an AppleScript which simply extracts the URL from the text file and triggers the download. – I’m pretty sure that I already came across something like this.
The script could easily be triggered either by a Folder Action or by configuring Hazel. – I don’t see the point of NoteTote, especially if one ends up needing Hazel anyway. It sounds a bit like system clutter to me.
