Mac Gem: Cameras

So you’ve just bought a new dSLR, but you also have a point and shoot for family occasions, and of course there’s your favourite on hand camera of the lot, your iPhone. The dSLR images of course go to Aperture or Lightroom, the point and shoot images go into iPhoto, and the iPhone, well you want to upload them to Flickr, so you want to grab them via PhoneView. How do you manage all this? Image Capture only has 1 option to act upon connecting digital media.

Turns out, someone else was frustrated from managing tons of imaging devices, and have written an app to solve the problem. Cameras is an intelligent preference pane, which guides your cameras, media readers, and iPhones to their correct application. I’ve only tried the app for a little while, but it works as advertised. The iPhone opened up PhoneView, and my Nikon point and shoot launched iPhoto.

For $10 a piece, this app will be a godsend for some (while others couldn’t care less). A 10 day 10 use trial awaits.

OR you could save yourself $10 by turning off the auto start on apps when you connect a camera. this way you can import with whatever program you want.
took me all of 2 seconds to figure out this ‘problem’ when buying a 2nd camera.

slow day at SA?

@oliver

Is there really any need for that kind of negativity? I personally was grateful for this post, I was aware of your oh so obvious solution, but see this as a more automated and hands free approach to working with my photos. Not to mention the benefits it has for the less computer literate users in my house.

Slow day in the life of Oliver?

You might want to hold off on this solution, as Image Capture in Snow Leopard has been updated to support camera-by-camera settings (among other things). Good for those planning to stick with Tiger or Leopard for a while, though!
