EventBox: One-Window Social Networking

Post image for EventBox: One-Window Social Networking

For someone who stays 24/7 on the internet, I’ve signed up for a lot of internet services. However, due to overlapping of functions in many of these services, it becomes difficult to keep up with everything. So I end up neglecting some (facebook) and overusing others (twitter). Someone obviously thought that all of it needs to be brought into one central location: where you can manage, update, and publish new content -  all in a single windowed application.

Now that I’ve set the stage, let me introduce you to my new favourite application, EventBox. The first product out of a newly set up UK based software development company “The Cosmic Machine”, EventBox seems to want to take a very bold step. “Pack your Social Networks in One Box” says the tagline — EventBox incorporates Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Digg, Pownce and Reddit. It can also act as your RSS feed aggregator.

A pretty bold task for a single application to manage, one would think. Each of these services has a different interface, a different way of working with content, so putting it in one box would result in chaos, or so I thought.

Six services in one box

While I will admit the interface is a little rough around the edges (beta version that it is), they have got it right the first attempt. Each service is perfectly fit into the interface, keeping a few elements of the web version while giving the entire application a consistent look.

Twitter
Let’s take twitter for instance. A fairly easy interface to implement as all it involves is 140 character updates. EventBox displays your tweets elegantly, with subtle colour variations for direct messages and replies. There’s a special section where you can view all of your DMs and @replies separate from the regular feed. EventBox will also feature a HUD styled twitter window so you don’t have to keep the EventBox window open to watch over new tweets.

Facebook
Facebook has a similar interface for updates, but also includes any photographs that may have been uploaded by you or your friends. There are separate sections for Friends Photos and your photos as well.

Digg/Reddit
Now if we move on to Digg, it is a totally different concept. EventBox displays digg updates for any sections you choose, and adds slightly modified UI elements for the articles, which let you know instantly that you’re in the digg window. You can then switch from upcoming or popular stories and use the search to instantly find any that interest you. Reddit and pownce are two services I don’t use, but the interface looks very similar (yet different and identifiable in their own way).

The RSS reader
For an application that wants to do so much, I thought the RSS reader would be just a slapped on addition. I’m surprised to say that this is the best RSS reader I have ever used on the Mac. Okay so I’m no judge for ‘good rss readers’ but in my opinion the interface design, the colour scheme, everything work together to provide a smooth reading experience. Each update is clearly separated, has a distinct title and adjustable content. Importing my feeds from NewsFire was very easy, as EventBox understands the OPML file format. You can also sort the feeds manually and organise them into groups. The team also promises RSS syncing via Google Reader and NetNewsWire in the near future, which will greatly enhance the usability.

Flickr
And lastly, Flickr. They have not only provided a definitive film strip like view for each Flickr photograph, but also included a fully featured upload tool! You can also tag and modify your existing photos. Not only that, it features your friend’s photos for which you can leave a comment. (And lest I forget, even the facebook section features the same uploader for photos.)

Talking about photos, EventBox can pop out its own picture viewer for any photographs found in any of the services. The photo viewer is barebones with literally no controls, but it is a handy tool nonetheless.

Animation Effects

The Cosmic Machine has not shied away froom using Core Animation effects. For instance, when a new twitter update comes through, it pops in and the others slide down. This not only makes the app super cool, it also gives you a visual cue as to what is happening. And I love the item dance that takes place when you type something in the search panel.

Awesome?

The team has been working hard on this application, and are very receptive to any feedback that the users throw at them. The latest update brings in individual settings for every service, a global ‘unread’ menu that displays all your unread updates from all services, as well as a bunch of cosmetic changes that didn’t make it to the screenshots. The team looks forward to adding last.fm, delicious, and orkut services and a whole bunch of features not yet ready for primetime.

EventBox is being actively developed, as can be seen by their extremely active twitter feed. The price during the beta is $15, which will go up to $20 for the finalised version. A 14 day trial awaits all those who want to try out this application, which I would highly recommend you do.

Discount!

Use the coupon code from the Smoking Apples magazine (Issue 2) for a 20% discount on the app. It’s a no-signup direct download, we promise.

Nice find Smoking! Looks awesome. I think the feature set is almost complete. I would only like to see support for multiple twitter accounts. With a desktop application with so much real estate, multiple accounts is a no brainer and easily implemented.

That does it for my dib on the contest right? Cause I’m off to download the demo. :)

muchomac November 18, 2008 at 12:23 am

Looking good. What about a friendster connection? And an iPhone app. I didn’t see myspace either? And… can we import RSS say from… netnewswire?

Milind Alvares November 18, 2008 at 12:27 am goobimama.blogspot.com

@Mikel: Sure! We’ll let you know if you win the license :)

@Muchomac: I’ve imported RSS feeds from NewsFire’s OPML export function. And since NetNewsWire has a similar export option, I don’t see any reason why it should not. However, RSS syncing (with Google reader and NewsGator) is coming soon so that will make it ‘awesomer’.

Tried this out the other day, really liking the interface. However, I think that individual updates from each feed [such as new tweets] should be displayed via Growl, not just a total number - or to have that as an additional option.
EventBox seems to cover the best social networks. One missing is MySpace, but none of my friends use that anymore :P
I think this could replace Twitterrific nicely :D

Really like it, the clincher would be to have an iPhone app to sit along side it. But I can understand that is easier said than done.

Feed syncing with Google Reader and perhaps a basic IM client? Would be really nice to have all that in one window.

Liam November 18, 2008 at 1:59 am

I’d agree with Aaron up there. An IM service would be good. Otherwise it’s a great app already!

EventBox looks very promising. This application could save me from having to constantly switch applications just to get to everything I like to stay current with during the day.

This might just be a killer app, but most promising is the support. Fast and responsive, the team behind EventBox looks like they are very much behind their application.

I give the app high marks and look forward to further development.

And as for other features & services:

1. multiple twitter accounts
2. quick input panel at the top or bottom
3. Retweet button for twitter
4. Short URL support for http://tr.im & http://twurl.nl
5. Refresh support via ‘command + r’

Hey, event box really rocks, I use it for Digg.com, Reddit, Twitter(kicks the hell out of twitteriffic) and Flickr.

It would be really usefull to have a Digg/Bury and “digg.com” inside it so you can see comments(often the best part of the digg links) the same should be or Reddit.

Stability is one of the main areas I’m worried, maybe it’s on my mac but it crashed about 4 times while I was using it.

RSS synching with Google Reader WOULD BE KILLER, definitely a MUST.

I haven’t used RSS yet but it should be something like NetNewsWire and with customizable styles for rss display(just lke in NNW).

ps: Quicksilver integration WOULD CONVINCE ME INSTANTLY.

Milind Alvares November 18, 2008 at 4:50 am goobimama.blogspot.com

@Dumitru:

We have contacted the Cosmic team and well, as I suspected, the digg integration will only come when digg opens up the API (which I dont’ think is anytime soon). Displaying the comments is a good idea though!

@everyone else: Nice feedback! We’ll be sure to pass on this stuff to the devs so they can make it more ‘awesomer’.

ARTx November 18, 2008 at 5:03 am

Nice app guys! And even nicer is the giveaway.

For my suggestion, I’d say RSS synchronisation would make it to the top, especially with Netnewswire on the iPhone. The twitter client totally kicks ass though! Actually, if I don’t win this license I’m screwed, cause I already can’t go back to twitterrific (looking back, I realise how crap it is)

paxton November 18, 2008 at 5:21 am

So, I would love to see a better facebook integration. But this seems not to be that easy. So you asked for one other service anyway. Therefore I vote for brightkite.com

Ashwin November 18, 2008 at 5:39 am ashwinr.com

Shouldn’t they add Orkut too? I’m sure a lot of Indian and Brazilians will be happy. :)

Milind Alvares November 18, 2008 at 5:42 am goobimama.blogspot.com

Orkut is in the list of services they plan on implementing in the future.

(You do know, as team member, you aren’t eligible for that license right?)

Tom November 18, 2008 at 8:40 am macintomblog.com

So far so good.

The “all in one” concept is very nice. I really like the RSS ability, and the Digg option works fantastic, I typed the word “Apple” into the search bar at the bottom and it INSTANTLY filtered all of the Digg entries to show only those with Apple in the title.

I would like to see a few features added:

multiple twitter accounts (I have a personal one, and one for my macintomblog)

the Facebook live feed would be great to see recent comments etc. (like on the iPhone, and the website of course).

I think a tumblr feature would be nice…not sure how easy it would be to make it compatible, but I’d love to quickly post to tumblr, add photos, links, etc.

I will continue to trial it, but so far it’s left a good first impression.

tom.

eventbox is smart. I’d like to favour items/events.

Dinkar November 18, 2008 at 11:24 am ilounge.com

I’d really love a multiple Twitter client support, in tabs. I don’t think it’ll be hard to implement.

Also, some love for Smoking Apples posts by default :) Not RsS, but a custom look.

Jonathan Kong November 18, 2008 at 1:33 pm fabrikade.sg

It will be a smashing one if full functionality of Friendfeed is integrated within Eventbox. After all, it pulls in feeds from other web social services and with that, you can easily manage, reply and publish almost everything else from there. It’s also easier to see new feeds/replies coming in with it’s UI layout.

And, thanks for the review Milind Alvares.

Rip Robinson November 18, 2008 at 4:23 pm

EventBox is a great convenience. I have been using the trial with FaceBook and Twitter, plus some feeds.

Additional services I would really like to see supported are LinkedIn and Plaxo for my businesss networks.

I use FaceBook the most but I am really starting to appreciate Twitter more and more. However, I have a lot of business contacts on LinkedIn and Plaxo who don’t do the whole Twitter thing. So, being able to see and update these as well while I am using EventBox for FaceBook and Twitter would be a real bonus!

V K November 18, 2008 at 11:15 pm

EventBox is amazing - after downloading the trial, I think that the UI and simplicity, coupled with the great features make it the ultimate choice for a social networking app.
It has condensed many of my online activities into one app, and I really apreciate the RSS and Digg support, as well as Twitter and Facebook.
The only things that I think could be added to it are support for Vimeo, and also the ability to post an update to both Twitter and Facebook at the same time.
Thanks for the post Smoking Apples and Milind Alvares.

Ronald November 20, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I’ve been using EventBox for 2 days now, and I love the simple and clean interface, and the integration of social networking services!!

For now, only 3 possible improvements:

1) Regarding Digg, the selection of subsections is unclear. If a subsection is checked, but the (top level) section is not, will the subsection show up in the feed? Solution would be: If a (top level) section is UNchecked, all subsection should be unchecked automatically. If a subsection is checked, the (top level) section should be automatically checked as well, perhaps ‘half checked’ if not all subsections are selected.

2) Regarding Facebook, now only status changes show up in the feed. Would be nice if notifications of recently added photos, responses to photos, friendship updates, etc. could also show up in EventBox. And then check in the preferences which notifications you would like to see.

3) For each service, you can adjust the preferences, for what you want to happen in case of a new event, for instance let the dock bounce or make a sound. Would be nice if you could set a default somewhere. So (for instance), if you don’t want the dock to bounce, you only have to uncheck 1 checkbox, instead of 1 for each service.

A social networking service, which I think would be a nice addition to EventBox, is LinkedIn.

Keep up the good work and I’m excited to see the future releases!!

-Smoking Apples rocks

Lidel November 21, 2008 at 4:23 am

I tried out EventBox and have been using it for 1 day. I love the digg and flickr features, really well done. I’m also thinking of signing for a twitter account since I think I’ll be using this regularly. Great app and great interface.

I love it so far.

RSS syncing with google reader would rock.

So would the addition of LinkedIn and LiveJournal.

Chris November 24, 2008 at 2:10 am theweeklyreview.ca

Tried this for a couple of days and really liked the idea. The only thing I would like to see added is Delicious.

Man, this is an excellent piece of software. Shows great potential. I might have to hit them up with a big list of things I’d like to see.

Cheers for the heads up on this.
