We knew an app like this was coming. What with the constant twitter updates, facebook chats, and the vast vastness of the internet. Heck you can get stuck wandering about for hours together on 9gag itself. In an effort to keep you from any such distractions and motivated on the task at hand, Concentrate from roobasoft makes its appearance one August evening.

concentrate main

Concentrate allows you to create different activities such as ‘work’, ‘study’, ‘intense twitterring’, and then tack on actions to each of these tasks. The actions include blocking websites, shutting down apps, launching websites, launching apps, speak up a message every so often using Alex’s voice, and open any documents in their respective apps. There’s others like setting iChat status messages, but for most part, it’s the above few that matter. The good news is, creating these tasks is as simple as can be. Just drag and drop your actions, and then specify what you want do be done in them. You can even have groups for applications and website which can be used for creating future actions.

Clicking “concentrate” on an activity will put all those actions to effect. It shut down Tweetie and iChat. And blocked facebook, twitter, and the rest of the social networks in the web browser. And did all that it was supposed to do. Coupled with one of these 3 distraction limiting apps, it’s almost like hiring a personal trainer. Future updates of the app plan on resetting your workspace including launching quit apps after the ‘concentrating’ is done.

It’s a little scary however, that one would lose control over one’s will power that one requires a computer to set things straight. I understand distraction limiters like Think or Isolator, but blocking websites so you can’t visit them if you wanted to is a little extreme. I won’t be using it. If you need the medicine though, Concentrate is it. You get 60 hours free to start with, and $29 to set your ways permanently.
