Postbox finally released as a public beta…

by Chris Zehm on February 10, 2009

The Mac has seen a lot of new applications lately, and many of them fit in spots we’re tired of hearing. Who wants another GTD app? However, when it comes to email, all we’re seen on the Mac is Apple’s own splendid Mail, Microsoft Outlook for business users, and I’m not sure who uses Thunderbird. Enter, a new email client Postbox, which looks a lot like Apple Mail, but has some nice features that some might consider switching to.

Postbox was in a private beta for quite a while now, but has today opened its doors for everyone to download. One of the key innovations in Postbox, is the way it manages your emails.

“Just click the Images tab to see a thumbnail gallery of every picture from every message, or the Attachments tab to browse through documents, files and more.”

Postbox also includes a much more functional message search, tabbed folder views, built in tagging, and includes GTD functions. It is also connected to various internet services like Twitter, Delicious and others.

We’ll be doing an in depth review of Postbox soon, so stay tuned for more updates on this seemingly awesome client. In the meantime you could check it out yourself and download a free beta copy.

I actually use Mailplane… and find it absolutely amazing. So it’s hugely helped by the fact that it only works with G-Mail, and the G-Mail interface is the most advanced of any (IMHO)… but I have to give it a big thumbs up and advise anyone with Google Mail – or more importantly with multiple G-Mail accounts a try.

I commend the developer(s) on doing a very good job on the applications… especially with the fact that its not a true cocoa app… and to make it somewhat seem like a cocoa app is not an easy feat.

(Disclaimer – I am very much against java apps and non-native apps for day-to-day interactions)

Now just think if the developer(s) could have spent the time working under the cocoa framework to build this app, securing all the cocoa-goodness and freebies… then the app would have been worthwhile – it would seriously have been something that I would have taken seriously and maybe even purchased… honestly!

Is this going to be free? I dont want to just use it for some time and make me pay for it to continue using it.

@Cleatus: yes its free. or so they proclaimed.

Well we’ve contacted them but they aren’t saying anything about the pricing. I’m assuming it’s not going to be free once out of beta. A little stiff those devs I must say.
