A little over 3 months after the their last major update, the Pixelmator team is back with a smoking hot update to their image editing tool for the Mac. The new version 1.4 dubbed “Sprinkle”, features an new painting engine, support for Adobe Photoshop brushes, clouds filter, document presets, and other UI enhancements.

I’ve been using the beta for a while now, and I can honestly say that the new engine is good. If you ever found Photoshop’s brushes palette to be a little daunting, Pixelmator will make you feel right at home. Easy sliders to change scatter, flow, jitter and all that so you can create some dramatic effects. I’m not a very good painter as such so I can’t demonstrate anything, but just playing around with it I know how good it is. The best part of this new engine is that you can import any Photoshop brush, so you don’t have to find any pixelmator compatible resources.

New document presets in Pixelmator can be used to quickly choose image dimensions and resolution for display, web, photo, or print projects. Users can also create their own document presets.
Pixelmator’s powerful new clouds filter allows the artist to easily generate realistic clouds that can be used in either photos, special effects, or for creating natural textures. - The Pixelmator Blog
I will post another update on how to make use of Pixelmator’s newest enhancements, but till then you are free to go ahead and try it out yourself. A single user license costs $59, but if you dig through our latest magazine issue you can score a full 20% off!
