Multiplex. The ‘wow’ is coming soon…

by Milind Alvares on October 21, 2008

Yesterday, we reviewed Ripit, the DVD ripping app. And along with it came a brief look into the people that bring Ripit to the table, Indy Hall Labs. The main reason I wanted you to know about Indy Hall Labs was to give you a chance to assess their potential and prepare you for a peek into the future projects that they have planned for the Mac platform.

To be released in November, Multiplex seems to be something out of the ordinary. A movie library at its core, the application stretches the capabilities of Core Animation to the hilt, displaying your DVD covers in a three dimensional grid with swanky animations to boot. The project was conceived as early as August this year and after a lot of discussion about the core functionality and user interface, the Indy Hall team has got something really special in the form of “Multiplex”.

Back in WWDC 2007, Steve Jobs demoed Core Animation and the application used to demo that functionality had simply wowed the audience, but it never got to see the light of day. Multiplex borrows from that concept in terms of searching and the associated animation and puts a terrific engine behind it. The engine is supposedly just as pretty as the UI!

Multiplex, of course, will be a perfect complement for Ripit, the DVD ripping application. Of course, it will do much more than that—managing your files across the network, transcoding to H.264, and getting those movies on your devices (I hope the iPhone is included, along with an iPhone controller). Of course, this is just what I’ve found from my digging around on the Indy Hall blog, but we have to wait and see whether the final product lives up to what has been said.

That said, I’m really excited about Multiplex and am hoping to be one of the first to get my hands on the beta which will be out in a few days. Check out the preview video, done in a Hollywood action trailer style, after the jump.

The music in the second part of that trailer is from Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth. Awesome choice.

The app looks really neat too.
