CrossOver Chromium brings Google Chrome to Mac

by Ashwin on September 16, 2008

Everyone and their mother-in-law must have downloaded and reviewed Google Chrome browser by now, except Mac & Linux users. While we wait for the gypsies at Google to release a native version, the folks at Codeweavers have ported it over to Mac and Linux already using their CrossOver emulation technology (yeah, I know, WINE Is Not an Emulator, but I’m not exactly sure what to call it instead). They’re calling it CrossOver Chromium (why such a short name, people!).

This should be used for experimental purposes only and CrossOver developers declare that it’s only “proof of concept, for fun, and to showcase what Wine can do”. CrossOver Chromium is available as a DMG file for free (unlike CrossOver Games or CrossOver Office). All you Safari and Firefox users, feel free to give this a test run and comment here on how good or bad this thing is. I, on the other hand, am completely satisfied with Safari and wouldn’t approach this one with a ten-foot stick.

i keep learning about more and more advantages and features with Chrome, with privacy, for example; now if only they would take care of the browser’s fickle cookie management…

Chrome is like halloween candy. Tastes good only for a short period of time. If Google wants to make Chrome something like what Firefox is, its gotta up the ante a bit. Simply stripping a browse of its features and calling it fast doesn’t quite cut it.

As for running Chrome via Crossover, I don’t see the point.

2 features in Chrome is interesting - the tab specific crash and frequently loaded pages thumbnails. These browser wars are good. Existing leaders will pull their socks up like how FX will get porn mode with v 3.1.

I’d love to try out Chrome but perhaps the native Mac version when it arrives. Just tell me that its not your Mac from which you got that screenshot. That is one hell of a screeny, whats the resolution of that screen ?? Looks awesome

use it whenever possible - that is when the site does not require flash or something else… quirks for sure, but faster it is and less encumbered, and more reliable even in this state. use it on work laptop (Windows) as well… not that much diff… its a dual core Dell 620. crossover is on mac pro 17 in. all in all use them all depending on the situation. there really is no perfect one tool.
