[Update: Issue 2 is out now! Grab it from this link]

Back in October, when we launched the new design, we said we were taking this to the next level. Well today we build upon that, with another feature of Smoking Apples. I’m so very pleased to introduce to you, the Smoking Apples Magazine.

smoking apples magazine

When we launched the new design, it became apparent to us that people wanted to dig through our content looking for more interesting articles. However, due to the nature of the internet, and problems with making that information easily  accessible, the most that users went through were the featured posts. So we decided that every month, we compile our best posts, in a stunning professional quality eMag would solve this problem. A little over two weeks later, we’re out with our first issue.

So what’s the deal with the magazine then? Here’s a little disclaimer from the magazine itself:

“This eMag is free to distribute by any medium. You can print it, email it, upload it on your web server, or share it on a p2p network if you will. You may however not edit any part of this PDF, copy the content, or split the pages. This PDF must remain whole at all times.

Smoking Apples is in no way associated with Apple, Inc., any software company, or person mentioned in this magazine, the website, or anywhere else. We are a totally independent in our news, views, and hold our journalistic integrity to the highest. Our views cannot be bought.”

So please download it, share it with your friends, and give us any feedback you can throw at us. This is our first issue, and we definitely want to get better next time.

The PDF looks fantastic guys! I’ve read all your posts but I’m still gonna keep the mag. The design is so clean and crisp that I almost feel guilty not paying for it :P

  2. Evan Garza on Monday 10, 2008

Thanks for your comment, Nigel! We really appreciate your comments and any constructive criticism you may have.
    Spread the word :) Evan

  3. Aayush Arya on Monday 10, 2008

Oh my God, this is freakin’ awesome, guys! Keep up the good work.

And thanks for throwing in a mention for me. I would’ve hated not to have made it at least into the first issue. :)

  4. Rory on Monday 10, 2008

Your mag looks nice. I did find one minor factual error. The battery, memory AND hard drive are replaceable in the low end polycarbonate macbook. The machines are essentially the same as the previous lower-end macbooks. Thanks for all of your efforts. I look forward to the next issue.

  5. Liam on Monday 10, 2008

Fuckin awesome work. Public space or not, you can’t hold back on the F word cause that’s how it is. I hope the future issues are also going to be free downloads as well (by the look of it I don’t think it will remain free for more than two issues)

    Liam.

  6. Evan Garza on Monday 10, 2008

Rory - thanks for pointing that out. There are a few little problems with the newsletter but will obviously be ironed out in later releases.

Thanks for all your comments, keep them coming.
    Evan.

  7. Manan on Monday 10, 2008

Sweet! That’s 1 of the best ebooks/eMags or whatever you wanna call it. Looked really good and why Aayush Ex?

  8. Milind Alvares on Monday 10, 2008

Thanks for the comments guys! Really means a lot.

@manan: Aayush has left Smoking Apples to pursue whatever it is he wants to pursue. We tried to keep him for as long as possible, but apparently there’s only so many knock knock jokes I could pull off.

  9. Vids on Monday 10, 2008

Excellent magazine guys. Worth more than 4MB of bandwidth. The design is simply stunning and the posts of course are Smoking Apples class. Already looking forward to the next issue!

  10. Dominic on Monday 10, 2008

Suppprrrrrb! Sent the PDF to my friend who is a recent convert (partly because of me I guess). She was asking me how to get a hard copy subscription! :)

  11. Ashwin on Monday 10, 2008

When I first saw the mag, I was dumbstruck. It’s the height of awesomeness. Good job, Milind.

There’s scope for improvement and we will try to bring out a better issue next time.

Wow! Lots going on at SA. I am dwonloading the magazine. Got surprised after reading that Aayush has left SA & found a new author on SA! I checked out the About section to read more about Evan but found out that it isn’t updated yet.

Evan, your readers want to know more about you!

  17. Evan Garza on Monday 10, 2008

Rajbir - hehe thanks for your comments. I’m actually waiting on Milind to add the info. Unfortunatly not _everything_ can be added but some small info is better than none :) Keep cool,
    Evan

    I love it!
I do have one question, where did you get your Dock that is in the “Review - Pixelmator: An early look at the 1.3 Beta “Tempo”” screenshot? I really like the blue circles around the running apps.

  20. Milind Alvares on Monday 10, 2008

I forgot I was using a modified dock until after the PDF was published. Now I can’t find the link to the dock so I can’t direct you to the right place. However, if you send us an email (http://smokingapples.com/contact-the-smoking-team/) I’d be glad to send you the resource files.
