What on earth is going on here! A year already? Wow! Didn’t expect to make it this far, and now that we’re here, I still can’t believe it.
I’d like to thank Ashwin, Aditya, and Aayush, all three of whom helped us set up this little production of ours. And I’ll throw a second thanks at Aayush, for being the strong pillar that he was during the initial stages of getting this whole show up and running. Without his editorial guidance I’m pretty sure we would have ended up posting Bollywood information. Which wouldn’t have been half that bad coming to think of it.
Of course, there’s the ‘current generation’ Apple smokers I’d like to thank: Avner, for helping us out with the PR and ads. Phil, our oldest (and tallest) non co-founder writer. Brandon Pittman, the aggressive and passionate reviewer than he is. Without editing we’d probably be sued by now. Chris, now Assistant Editor, for helping me sort through the junk that the rest of the writers send in. Corey, ex-firefighter now-presenter with straight-from-the-heart writeups. Ankur Gupta, B-Tech student from New Delhi, now heading our iPhone apps department. And Jonas Wisser, brand new on the team is just about finding his footing (with a giant 2000 word article to start with, I might add). I myself didn’t realise we had so many on the team!
A huge thank you to our sponsors which is one of the main reasons we have been able to stick around for so long. It’s a fun but hard job, and to get a few bucks to spend at the end of the day makes it all worth it.
Year 1 was the beginning. But we’re not slowing down. In fact, I think we’re more than prepared for Year 2. We won’t disappoint.
Yours,
Milind Alvares, in first person. And Preshit Deorukhkar backing my words.
Co-founding members of the Smoking Apples team.
Giving away an iPod Shuffle!
We’re not the richest guys on the planet, but we’d like to say thank you by giving away a brand new 4th Generation iPod Shuffle to one lucky winner. This is not sponsored by anyone, so we have only you to thank. And if you don’t make the cut, there’s two $10 iTunes gift cards you can use to buy anything you’d like at the iTunes Store. Let me just state the rules first:
1. Instead of the usual ‘comment or retweet’ style of giveaways, we’ve got something challenging for you to do. Write, draw, carve, arrange “SA” or the SA logo on anything (surprise us!), grab a picture of it, and slip it into the comments. Use your imagination, creativity, or wit to come up with something ‘awesome’. Yes, ‘awesomeness’ is going to be scale on which the winner will be judged. You can upload the image on any host, and add the link to the image in the comments.
a. Real pictures instead of Photoshop jobs. Unless you’re doing something really special.
b. You can use the tags if you want to embed the image in the comment itself.
c. Submissions can be sent in till 22nd August.
d. If you’re unsure about uploading the image, you can forward the email to our PR email address to the right.
2. The $10 iTunes gift cards will be given to a retweet and a comment as runners up prizes.
3. The Shuffle is only open for residents of US, Canada, Europe, and India, since those are the places we can get it shipped. Yes, it will arrive at your doorstep. The iTunes gift cards are valid for US iTunes accounts only.
4. No this is not a scam. We’re better than that. (Standard giveaway rules apply)
Most of all, we just want to know what you have to say!

Kudos, great to see SA complete a full year! It’s been a pleasure to read all the awesome articles posted by the team especially Milind. Its fulfilling to a part of this awesome blog and help it nurture to the pinnacle of success!
Congratulations to everyone in the team.
I know SA wouldn’t have been what it is now without Milind. Keep up the good (should I say awesome?) work, Milind!

Excellent site, guys. Kudos on the anniversary, too! Are your northern neighbours left out of this contest? You can really ship to Europe and India but not Canada?
@CPUU: Sorry bout that. Added Canada to the mix. Your submission better be worth it. (And thanks!)
You’re a little mistaken. This blog is based in India, not the USA.
@Aayush – Sorry about the mistake.
@Milind Alvares – Thanks! I’ll get right to work.
Congratulations!
Congrats guys. Great going.
Congrats guys! I always like the articles here – keep up the great work! Here are my two submissions:

I may not be a master carver, but it came out awesome, just like you wanted it.
What’s better than a little cake? Nothing. So I figured I’d make the Smoking Apples logo cake. For your viewing pleasure:

I couldn’t get the sprinkles everywhere but I think the general idea is pretty clear….
Happy First Birthday!
Well, we don’t want you getting sued, now do we?
Like jlbrew3, I’d also like to know when the contest is over.
Contest will be over on Sunday evening (22nd Aug) IST. Keep those submissions coming, but you can take your time to work on making it ‘awesomer’.
I was actually wondering if you were going to edit my comment or not, me being a perfectionist and stuff.
Oh it’s good to see we still have a week.
Congrats on the anniversary! My favourite Apple blog so far. Love the design, presentation and content of course. keep up the good work.
Was making some pancakes so I thought why not!
http://yfrog.com/0l80892217j

Can’t wait for my mom to get home. I’ll ask her to make some pancakes. Once I was hanging out with my friends and decided to make pancakes. I made a heart, a smiling face and a ding dong (not very proud of the last one).
I heart smoking apples http://yfrog.com/0mlbtaj
@Mark
I still didn’t get to eat pancakes, but got something that appears to also contain something similar to pancakes. Here’s a pic: http://bit.ly/9OEcz
Do you guys have this in India or US? It’s a quite popular type of fast-food. (BTW, tell me if this is way to off-topic)
Awwww! I was in town then! Missed the party =(
Must’ve been awesome! ;D
@Milind Alvares
You said Sunday – 22 August in your comment. That’s a Saturday for me and probably for you too. http://bit.ly/4rF2sU
In the rules, the day is not mentioned. Should I understand the day is Saturday then?
Here’s my contest entry. I wanted to make a cake, but Leland made one so I decided to try something else. I’m glad he did it first because it made me think more about what I wanted to create.
Here it is:
FACT: The only image processing done is for retouching and adding the leaf, nothing more. It’s 99% pure, untouched reality. Anyone could have done it in Photoshop, but where’s the fun in that?
Think of it as Smoking Hot Apples. You guys are that awesome (=hot) that smoke is coming out of your website! (if that makes any sense..)
It took some work to recreate the SA logo on paper without knowing the proportions or even having a higher resolution version of your logo. I think I got them right in the end.
How I made it all: http://bit.ly/YXKor
As you can see, it involved drawing, cutting, lighting, photography and some photoshopping. And a lot of smoke in my house. Quite annoying since I’m not used to it’s smell and especially in my room hehe
At least I found a good use for cigarettes – making your logo stand out from the crowd.
Anyway, Happy Birthday guys, this is for you
Drooling over all the eatables.
@Lucky Holy moly! Pure awesomeness! The whole process (pic) is quite interesting. May I know your profession & website/twitter?
Hehe! Well thank you
Hmm… I’m 19 and I just finished high school this spring. Around the 6th grade, I made a website on some free host. A teacher saw my interest and teached me a little HTML. That got me started in web-design and so I went to an Art High School (www.artabm.ro) where I studied Arhitecture and Design for the next 4 years. Another hobby of mine is photography. I think this is the first time I used the black material on the wall for a photo. For college, I decided to study Public Relations.
As you already found out, my twitter is “lucretiu pop” (in one word). That’s my name.
Once again, thank you
Oh and here are a few more shots http://bit.ly/3Zu8RB from the “photo shoot” (out of a total of ~60)
I have 3 bugs/suggestions for you that should be fixed on the website:
- the comments have a date that is off by 6 days. My comment above appears to be entered Saturday 15, even if it was entered just minutes ago, today (Friday 21).
- After entering a comment, I’m taken to the same page, but without loading any of the content. Only the sponsors are loaded. Tell me if you want a screenshot.
- At the bottom, maybe you’d like to update the copyright notice to (c) 2009 or (c) 2008–2009.
Since the contest is over, when are you guys posting the results? I’m waiting impatiently
Well on the contrary I’m waiting with a rather high degree of Patience.
