The 20″ Cinema Displays disappear from the store!

by Milind Alvares on February 19, 2009

In a bizzare and totally unexpected event, the 20″ cinema displays have vanished from the Apple Online Store! The police have been alerted, and are busy looking for clues to solve this puzzle. If we look back, a few months ago a similar thing happened to the 23″ display, except they got an honorary mention before being wiped out the face of the earth. (Actually it’s not that bad, the ACD page still mentions all of the three displays in full glory.)

As it stands now, you either get a 24″ Apple LED Display that’s only compatible with one of the portable notebooks’ DisplayPort, or get yourself a mammoth 30″ display to go with your Mac Pro. That or you get one of the many after market products made by Dell and all of his friends. Which you have to if you are planning on extending your Mac mini or iMac’s display. (Update: Amazon still seems to have some in stock, if you’re so determined)

Update: AppleInsider reports: ”With immediate effect, the following products are ‘End of Life’ (EOL); Apple 20″ Cinema Display,” the Cupertino-based company wrote in a worldwide bulletin to its sales and service channels. “All backlog will be cancelled and there is no automatic order conversion.”

So what does this mean for us? Hopefully, good things to come. We could see the Apple Store go down for a few moments and come back to life with sparkling new products. Or better still, we could see a brand new press invite floating around followed by an Apple Special Event announcing new iMacs, Mac minis and some sparkling new LED displays (complete with a $50 matte screen replacement option). What say you?

Duh! Just what I feared, Mac Minis with Mini-Displayport.
