Obama staff lost in White House Windows mess…

by Chris Zehm on January 23, 2009

windows-bsodWe all know that Obama uses a Mac (although he won’t let go of his BlackBerry), and his entire tech savvy campaign used modern technology and internet. Imagine their surprise when they found the White House to be living back in the stone ages!

What does that mean in 21st-century terms? No Facebook to communicate with supporters. No outside e-mail log-ins. No instant messaging. Hard adjustments for a staff that helped sweep Obama to power through, among other things, relentless online social networking.

The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos.

The one positive comment that Microsoft can get from this bad press, “It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said of his new digs.

That is being disputed.

Sounds like logistics and bureaucracy is more to blame. Of course, The Washington Post wouldn’t let that get in the way of a story trashing Bush. You would think they would have contacted Bush staffers for comment.

I wonder if they’re referring to Office 2003. If that’s the case, then I don’t see what the problem is other than sticking with proprietary formats. I’d suggest that Office 2003 is more capable than 99 percent of the “modern” office suites out there. The one percent being occupied by Office 2007 — maybe.
Regardless, this relatively shoddy reporting and probably highlights a shortcoming of the Obama transition team than anything else. If it’s such a big deal to them, they should have handled it before moving into their new digs.
