Macintosh at 25: The 5 must watch Apple videos

by Milind Alvares on January 25, 2009

Apple has a track record for making awesome ads, right from 1984, to present day’s Mac vs PC ads. Here are some videos that every  Mac fan must watch. Sure you’ve seen them before, but it doesn’t hurt to click on that play button, and reminisce over memories you may or may not have.

The 1984 superbowl ad

Personally, I didn’t quite understand this ad, but since everyone say it’s amazing, I’ve come to believe that myself!

Steve Jobs introduces, the Macintosh

Shows that even back in the day, Apple’s presentations had class, and style, that most companies even today do not possess. I mean, that is like the perfect soundtrack!

Toasting the Pentium processor

There were a lot of jabs at the Pentium processor in the 90s, but this one stands out. Even Paul Otellini joked about it when Intel started supplying chips for Apple.

The Think Different campaign

In my opinion, the best ad ever made.

Gates is on screen!

Jobs returns at Macworld 1997, and Bill Gates is on the screen! He does talk in the same slow lorris way, but it is really weird and at the same time, awesome, looking at Bill on that giant screen.

I’m sure someone has told you this by now, but the first ad would make sense if you’ve ever read or seen “1984″ . . .

Uh, actually no. Googled around and landed on a movie titled 1984. Is that what this is about?

Jess

What’s funny/ironic is that now BECAUSE of computers the world is more like 1984 (with Big Bro watching over us) than ever.

Jess

Yes, and if you’ve ever heard anyone reference “Big Brother” that came from the book as well. That’s Big Brother on the screen, and she (which is also significant from a feminist standpoint [which is not necessarily my view . . . ]) throws the jackhammer at the screen showing her rebellion. 1984 was the year the Mac was introduced, so that’s why they say that 1984 won’t be like “1984″ the book/movie. But as I said, it’s funny because the world is now more like 1984 than ever.

Thanks so much for that! I’ll definitely check out this whole 1984-big brother thing and make sure I don’t make a fool of myself on SA again. :)

Hey I didn’t know that as well! I still like the ad though. And I agree with you, the think different ad is one of the best ads ever done. Makes you want to run out and buy another mac even though you’ve just seen the ad on your own mac.

Cool list thanks! The bill gates one is lame though. It’s only funny for a second or so. Hadn’t seen the Pentium one before :)

Look here Cousin Jess. The hot running babe, that saved everyone from big brother, did not throw a jackhammer. She in fact threw a sledgehammer. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for this list. Very inspiring! If you read “Inside Steve’s Brain” you’ll understand why the superbowl ad was so hugely popular. It wasn’t supposed to be released until the last minute. And man, the 3rd video changes history! So touched by it!

@Azeem: My ‘most watched’ Apple video must be the new MacBook video. It might be the Coldplay soundtrack at the beginning, or the U2 soundtrack at the end, or maybe just the whole ad/video is just freakin’ brilliant!

You forgot the Steve jobs Stanford commencement address. That us one of the most inspirational speeches.
