Mac/Safari Market Shares Up! IE and Vista, Well…

The market shares are out! The market shares are out! Oh, if only people got excited over market shares like how they do when say, the Apple Store goes down. Nevertheless, I’m here to report on the market share results for November 2008, posted by Net Applications.

Gathering results from over 40,000 websites in the Net Applications network, the results show a relative usage of web browsers and desktop operating systems accessing the internet. Let’s take the browsers first.

Apple Safari: 7.13% (vs. May 2006: 3.26%)
iPhone: 0.37%
Microsoft Internet Explorer: 69.77% (vs. May 2006: 84.20%)
Mozilla Firefox: 20.78% (vs. May 2006: 10.55%)
Google Chrome: 0.83%
Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer: 0.01%
CrackBerry: 0.00%

Note that Chrome uses the same WebKit engine of Safari, so maybe those figures need to be tallied up as well. Of course, we need to realise that there’s a Storm coming, and we’ll soon see the CrackBerry market share move a whole 0.01% up the charts. Firefox on the other hand has moved up to the magical 20%, hats off to those guys! Moving on, the OS market share.

Apple Macintosh: 8.87% (vs. MAY 2006: 4.43%)
Windows XP: 66.31%
Windows Vista: 20.45%
Linux: 0.83%
Apple iPhone: 0.37%

Here’s some things we can deduce from the above figures. Mac OS X Leopard is just below half of Windows Vista. Linux, the long standing “Year of Linux” operating system, is just double that of the iPhone. Maybe next year.

Of course, these figures are still not the real market share, who knows what that really is. Taking a sneak peek at the Smoking Apples market shares, we see that Safari is the real market leader with over 60%, leaving just 5% for IE users. Now that I’m sure is music to any web developers ears!

  3. That’s Good news for Apple in this economy!

But in all honesty, I just think that’s more indicative that Mac users tend to use the internet more because there are less applications on them and that a lot of ppl use Windows for work more than surfing the web. And many of those who are at home with Windows are playing games versus visiting those logger websites. ;)

  5. Of course it is. I mean, there can’t be that many more iPhones in the market than Crackberries now can there?
