Mac mini leak declared fake! (Update: Or not!)

by Milind Alvares on February 21, 2009

First appearing at the MacRumors forum, the new Mac mini spyshot spread like wildfire. After all, we haven’t seen a spyshot since back in Macworld. That is enough of time to turn anyone from sensibly watching rumours from afar, to just swallowing it up as totally real and factual evidence.

I personally was horrified at the sight of seeing the mini not have any noticeable changes with regard to its appearance. It was the same Mac mini, only with the addition a DisplayPort and a total of 5 USB ports. It can’t be possible that Apple waited this long just to do a spec update. Thankfully, a 9to5 Mac reader “Dave”, who is an expert at PCB design, proved how the image was faked.

[Dave] noticed that the Mini DisplayPort and Mini DVI aren’t lined up with where the motherboard is.  While Apple could have lifted the ports, that kind of setup weakens the joints. Would Apple risk this type of behavior on the back of a consumer level machine – on the monitor port, the one which will likely incur the biggest load?

In addition to that, they did a check on the image itself, and found inconsistent artefacts. Most probably the work of Photoshop. Hopefully that settles it for this little spyshot. I’m sure Apple has a much better Mac mini in store for us, and every day we will pray and hope for an announcement for an Apple Special Event.

Update: Or Not…

As MILE notes, 9to5 Mac has found a video of the machine showing it from all sides. For your convenience, we’ve also embedded it right here after the jump.

Hmm, was hoping for more of a substantial update to the Mini. This isn’t that much of an update, let’s hope that it’s still a fake, maybe just an in house prototype.

If there’s a Displayport, there must be better graphics (what were they thinking?) because GMA 950 couldnt be more outdated. And then there could be the MagSafe port for compatibility with 24″ Apple Displays. Wot?

Bikalpa has it about the magsafe. I think that is the direction. They tried this before with their studio displays, but it might work.
