Apple has just made available the Software Update for iPhone OS 3.0.1(7A400). Weighing in close to 230MB, the update fixes the deadly SMS hack vulnerability for iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS and does not appear to bring along any other changes.

The update comes merely hours after the exploit was demonstrated by iPhone security expert Charlie Miller and his colleague Collin Mulliner at the Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas. The exploit also affects other smartphones, and Google has already released a patch for its Android devices.
Earlier today, an O2 spokesperson, speaking to BBC, revealed that Apple was already working on the patch and that it would be made available through iTunes on Saturday, but it looks like someone jumped the gun.

If I had to guess, I’d guess that this also breaks the hack to enable MMS and tethering on AT&T iPhones.
