Apple beats recession with record quarterly earnings

by Chris Zehm on April 23, 2009

Everyone was anticipating Apple’s Q2 09 earnings report, wondering whether Apple’s quarterly was beat down by the recession. But Apple has proved it yet again, with a record year-over-year quarterly earning. In fact, it’s the highest quarterly earning outside of the holiday season ever!

The Company posted revenue of $8.16 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion, or $1.33 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $7.51 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.

Apple sold 2.22 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a three percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 11.01 million iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 3.79 million representing 123 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

Numbers are flying all over the place! iPhone OS Device sales were particularly strong. As for the conference call, some interesting points were made there as well.

  • 3% year over year decrease in Mac sales. (The iPhone/iTunes Store is definitely helping Apple keep things together)
  • 35,000 apps in the App Store, billionth app a few hours away.
  • iPhone now in 81 countries, China not yet.
  • Over 11 million iPods, new March quarter record — iPod touch particularly strong.
  • $28.9 billion in cash, $800 million more than the last quarter

When asked about the Netbook, Cook had some things to say.

For us, it’s about doing great products. When I look at what is being sold in the netbook space, I see cramped keyboard, junky hardware. This is not something we would put the Mac brand on. It’s not a space as it exists today, that we’re interested in. But we do look at the space, and are interested to see how customers response. People who want a small computer — might want to buy an iPod touch or an iPhone. If we find a way where we can deliver an innovative product — then we’ll do that. We have some interesting ideas. Product pipeline for the Mac is fantastic.

The economy did have an effect on sales though. While consumers were happy buying MacBooks and iPhones, Pro product sales took a dip. In fact, the Mac sales were 3% lower than the year-over-year quarter. The US market took the biggest hit while international markets emerged.

Steve Jobs on the other hand is still on schedule to appear in June. They’ve got amazing products in the pipeline. Apple is still strong.
