Get back the Album View in iTunes 8

by Ashwin on September 23, 2008

With the advent of iTunes 8, you must’ve noticed that the new Grid view has effectively replaced the Album view. Well, Apple has cleverly incorporated the Album view into the UI, but it might go unnoticed so we’re here to point it out in bold.

Although iTunes 8 doesn’t list Album View as one of the main viewing modes, you can turn it on by any one of the following two ways:

Via List View

Album View via List View
Hit the small arrow at the extreme left (see the screenshot). Clicking it again will bring it to List View.

Via Grid View

Double clicking any tile in the Grid View will bring up the Album View. Once you’re in, you can navigate to other Albums with the left and right arrow at the top extreme right. Revert back to Grid view by clicking All Albums/Artists (numbered 1 in screenshot). You can also go to the List View by clicking the small arrow (numbered 2 in screenshot).

All you Album view gypsies (yes, I have no idea what that means), it’s time to rock with iTunes 8. If you’ve any iTunes query or want to share a tip or two, sound off in the comments.

I got this strange behavior after switching to iTunes 8. Earlier in coverflow mode there used to be one album art for one album but now after switching to iTunes 8 my album art got real messed up and it shows one album art cover for one track in an album. So if I have 8 tracks in one album, in coverflow and also in Grid view I get 8 album art covers for each tracks!! No amount of cmd+i thing restore the earlier behavior!! If you have understood what i’ve said don’t hesitate to give your suggestion

This problem crops up now and then. Command+I your tracks in the album, and rename the album to something else. Then rename it back to the original name doing the same thing and it should get fixed up.

If that doesn’t work, select “Compilation: Yes” in the Get info for multiple items, and then disable it doing the same thing.

Selecting Compilation to yes should fix the problem of art cover for different songs in the same album.
I also had the other problem of having album art only for the first song and remaining songs blank. This was more irritating while playing songs on iPod Touch. I was about to ask this question in the forum. Select all the songs – cmd I – Drag the album art in that small art window. (copy paste is not working here, it brings only small blank square) Drag worked for me. I did this for few albums and later on I found that my all other albums are working perfectly. Black magic!

correction – for me album art was not showing in Now Playing window on mac. it was showing in cover flow and all.

Coverflow will display any artwork available for that album. While the Now Playing box and the iPhone/iPods will display the artwork for that particular track. And you don’t even need to do a Cmd+i, just select all tracks and drag into the “Now playing” box, only make sure it shows you the info for the ‘selected item’.
