500 million apps downloaded and counting…

by Milind Alvares on January 17, 2009

Six weeks ago, when Apple announced that it had 300 million downloads in their App Store, everyone was stunned. It meant that Apple got an additional 100 million downloads in just six weeks (their previous announcement in November was for 200 million).

Here we are again, six weeks later, and Apple tells the world that they’ve got 500 million downloads clocked on the iTunes app store. That’s 33 million per week, 4.7 million per day, or a little less than 200,000 downloads per hour. And the number seems to be constantly increasing as more and more apps make it to the store. Yes, the current tally is over 15,000 apps in the iTunes catalog. Within just 6 months of existence.

There might be a few things Apple might be doing wrong with the App Store, but there are obviously so many things they are doing right. How else would people be able to quit their day jobs and focus totally on building apps for this now gigantic platform! There might be Palm Pres that are making their way in, and Google Androids that might have their own little App Store, but when you look at figures like this, you begin to realise what an amazing platform Apple has built for us. Thank you Apple.

Doesn’t surprise me at all. Apple claimed that the market in 2009 would be worth at least a Billion. Here’s shooting for two! :)
