I found a nice way to get gmail-like threads in Mail without any extra sent messages. It gives exactly the view you would see in gmail.

The issue I have is that I like a clean inbox. With the Sent folder selected I get all my sent messages along with the few inbox emails I have. Really I want to be able to see the whole conversation when I choose a particular email in my archive folder. I’ve tried different Smart Mailboxes but can’t seem to get it right.
