Pwnage Tool 2.2 and QuickPwn 2.2 released

by Milind Alvares on November 23, 2008

Nuff said? Well some friendly advice wouldn’t hurt.

iPhone 2G: Update your iPhone using iTunes and then use QuickPwn (Mac or Windows) to jailbreak it. iPhones that have previously been unlocked using the Pwnage Tool, can safely update their iPhone using iTunes and continue using it in an unlocked but non-jailbroken state. Trust me, the iPhone is much faster that way.

iPhone 3G: Pay close attention to what the dev team has to say about this.

If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.

What they mean to say is, use only the Pwnage Tool 2.2 if you want to jailbreak your iPhone 3G. If you have a hardware unlock (by means of SIM attachments) then updating to v2.2 either ways will get your iPhone locked. So those who have an iPhone 3G with a hardware unlock, don’t update to v2.2. There is currently no software unlock for the iPhone 3G, but the dev team has been making some headway

iPod Touch 1G: Update using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to jailbreak.

iPod Touch 2G: No jailbreak available yet. So only update the normal way and continue hoping for a jailbreak.

If you have any questions, doubts, or rants, write out a comment and we’ll sort things out for you.

My brother has an iPhone 1.1.3, its unlocked and jailbroken. Now should I connect to iTunes, and update to 2.2 and then use QuickPwn 2.2or Pwnage Tool 2.2 to again unlock and jailbreak it ??
Can you clear this thing I am confused with so many tut out there and also the IPSW naming thing scares the hell out of me!!

Milind Alvares

Yes indeed, it is that simple. We might be doing a guide regarding this, but for most part you just need to upgrade to 2.2 and then QuickPwn.

Oscar

I quickpwn my iphone 2.1 because i kept getting an error using pwnage tool (im on a mac running leopard & i got it unlocked/jailbrake). “iPhone 2G:iPhones that have previously been unlocked using the Pwnage Tool, can safely update their iPhone using iTunes and continue using it in an unlocked but non-jailbroken state. Trust me, the iPhone is much faster that way.” Does this mean i don’t need ANY tools at all?.. i can update like any other legit ATT user?? Thanks

Milind Alvares

Yes you can update like any legit user. It will keep your unlock going (but you won’t have any access to jailbroken apps. If it doesn’t work the first time (like it didn’t in my case), repwn the iPhone using Pwnage Tool and try the update thing again.

Kaisar

Thanks for the tip about directly updating in iTunes. My iPhone 2G has suddenly gained a huge speed boost. I never used the jailbreak functions anyway. The pwnage tool should have an unlock only feature built in.

Thanks again and nice blog. :)

Azeem

Can we have Cydia and App Store at the same time ??

Milind Alvares

Yes you can. That’s the default way QuickPwn and Pwnage work.

Wez

Got to say I didn’t really notice any speedboost on my 2G jailbroken or standard. It’s still plenty fast enough for what I use it for. Plus I’d put up with a small performance drop if it meant I could use apps like cycorder or Swirly MMS.

Milind Alvares

Well if you use the jailbreak features then by all means do it. Just that the Pwnage tool jailbreaks whether you like it or not and with the App Store I think most people will be content with having just those apps.

I have an AT&T 2G iPhone 2.2. Can I unlock, but not jailbreak, the phone using Pwnage Tool? Just want to use it with local sim cards when traveling in Europe. Thanks for the advice.

Neo

I guess Neo has to step in and deal with these two.

@Funk Masta: Yes. It is that simple. Update in iTunes and then use QuickPwn.

@HWE: As Milind has mentioned, if your iPhone is already jailbroken using Pwnage or Quickpwn, you can just “Update” using iTunes and it will keep you unlock while doing away with the jailbreak. There is no way for the Pwnage tool to “only unlock” though.

Milind Alvares

Thanks Neo!

I should warn those who are ‘updating’ (unlock but no jailbreak) that you could potentially lose 500MB of disk space every time you do that. This is a temporary loss and can be reset by restoring your iPhone or rePwning it, but the problem exists.

I will be looking into this issue and see how best to update without losing space.

Hi there,

I’m a JB n00b, never done it before. I currently have an unlocked (natural unlock, since I’m in Hong Kong and we get unlocked iPhones here) 3G iPhone running 2.2 and would like to finally venture into JB-ing (wonna give BiteSMS a try). Am also running Win XP. So what are my options? Does JB-ing mean flashing it with a new firmware (AT&T firmware, perhaps?) or does it just do something minor to the system files? I wouldn’t want to lose any settings with my local operator…

So basically, my set up is:
1) Unlocked 3G iPhone from Hong Kong running 2.2
2) Using Win XP

What should I do so I can have Boss Prefs, BiteSMS and Winter Board?

Thanks a ton in advance!

T

Whoa that was quick! :O

Haha awesome, didn’t realise it’s that easy. So basically iTunes will still recognise my iPhone fine after I JB and I can still do all my backups and stuff right?

Just curious, what happens if I do a backup after I JB’ed and then want to restore with THAT backup? Will it automatically JB it for me again or would I have to do it all over again?

And what should I expect when I plug in my 2.2 JB’ed iPhone into iTunes the next time it wants to update to 2.3? Will it brick my iPhone?

Sorry for all these Q’s, just want to be sure :)

Thanks again!

Neo

Yes. iTunes won’t know the difference.

You have to jailbreak again. There’s a way to backup your jailbreak apps as well, but you need to get a little more into jailbreaking to understand all that (SSH, etc).

At any time you can just select “Restore” and it will reset your iPhone back to the factory state using the latest iPhone software version. (This is specific only to your unlocked iPhone 3G. The rest have to worry about baseband updates).

Am glad to help out. Smokin’ Apples is my new favourite blog!

HWE

Thanks, Neo. You guys are really quick. It’s very helpful to hear from someone who knows how this works. I’ll be watching this blog from now on.

Josh

So I have a 2.1 Jail broken phone but I just want to upgrade to legit 2.2 and then maybe Jailbreak it again at some later date.

What do I do?
Do I just upgrade through itunes by hitting the upgrade button?

Cheers
Love this blog!

bxt

Is your iPhone a 2G one? If yes then by all means do as you see fit. For you can always just to a restore and be back to where you started. Hitting the Update button will remove the jailbreak and keep the unlock. Re-jailbreaking is just a quickpwn away.

Mongkol

I have 3G iPhone bought from Hongkong, and upgraded to firmware 2.2 with iTune.

I tried to use quickpwn2.2 to install Cydia but not successful.
When running Quickpwn2.2, the second screen checked for firmware version could not find firmware version so it stopped and not go any further.

Can anybody please advise?

Josh

I just did it and yes that is what yo do, just incase anyone else wants to know. :)

I’m on a Mac and the update has been taking more than 40 min now and I’m still stuck at the “contacting software update server.” Is it normal?

I heard it took some people from as short as 15 min to 5 hours but they were at the stage of “verifying software” instead of “contacting server”….

Milind Alvares

Getting stuck there is not normal. Cancel out of it and try again. Check your internet connection.

It is also possible that iTunes is throwing a dialog box behind the window. So manually move everything to the side to see any confirmation boxes.

I updated my iPhone & it is unlocked but not jailbroken. I don’t really need to jailbreak but I had the tzones hack before & after the update I checked the apn settings & it kept it from tmobile (epc.tmobile.com). Can I use it without having the tzones hack installed from cydia???

1-ni*

After a few attempts to download the update software I finally updated my iPhone (previously 2.1 jailbroekn/unlocked with QuickPwn) via iTune. It’s unlocked but I can’t really use the phone like I used to. The start screen shows I can only make emergency call and once i slide to open, there’s only the dial pad available so I was able to make/retrieve phone calls and receiving SMS from friends but nothing else can be done with the interface. To solve the problem quickly I just had to QuicPwn the phone. Anyone encountered problems like this?

Milind Alvares

@1-ni: I had the same issue the first time I tried it. Then I used Pwnage, restored to 2.1, and did the update immediately after that. Second time it worked.

@Oscar: I don’t know what a Tzone hack is, so I hope someone here can help you out.

Ben

I have a extra iPhone 3g and my friend wants me to jailbreak it. There’s no sim card. Does that matter? Or do I need to change any settings while I build the firmware? Or should I put my sim card in

Milind Alvares

I’m not exactly sure but I believe the iPhone 3G will only work with the official sim card. Even the sim attachment things now refuse to work with the 2.2 firmware. Nevertheless, jailbreak should only be done via the Pwnage Tool.

I have a 1gen iphone that was never unlocked before. I followed all of the steps QuickPwn listed correctly but when i get to step number 10 and press the arrow, it skips step 11 and goes straight to 12. The phone never connects to recover mode. What should i do now? I dont want to just give up and restore everything lol. Plz Help. Im using a windows vista PC. Thank You.

Halley

I jailbroken and unlocked a 2G 2.2 by Quickpwn 2.2.

I got signal (USA)wit a SIM that is not AT&T. I can receive calls but I cannot makes calls.

I got a notification ‘DIFFERENT CARD’ Etc. How I can fix it?

Thank you

Milind Alvares

@Grant: I’ll look into it and let you know the details on how to go about it. In the meantime, check out the yellowsn0w post for a brief look at how you need to upgrade. By the looks of it, it’s pretty simple.

grant

i have looked into it and their are some success stories and there have been more problems, i am looking for a proven way to unlock ma iphone 3g 2.2 and that the method works
and do you think yellowsn0w works? because i don’t want to try it and find that it could kill my iphone! lol
Thanks

Talhouet

I’ve got a 3G iPhone jailbroken but not unlocked, I would like to upgrade it to version 2.2 . I don’t care about unlocking it, but I don’t want to loose the apps I’ve found via Cydia. How do I do? Do I upgrade it through iTunes directly and jailbreak afterwards or do I use Pwnage tool directly?

lil scott

I am in this competition with my friend to see who can jailbreak their 2nd gen 2.2 firmware ipod touch first. so please help me in my competition. thank you so much who ever can hepl me with this duty. :-)

* you * help

Milind Alvares

Sure I’ll add your email to my to-do lists. Of course, all you need to do is subscribe to the rss feed of blog.iphone-dev.org and you’ll be the first to know about it.

@Talhout: I think you will need to reinstall all your Cydia apps. Although, there is an app available in Cydia itself that allows you to make a backup of ‘your jailbreak’ and then restore it once you’re done updating.

Gatu

I have an iPod touch 1G. I jailbreaked it with quickpwn22 and I installed cydia and the installer program. After I added 3rd party apps and theme, I erased installer & Cydia. Everything was fine at first but afterwords I tried to reinstall it again to add more apps. The problem now is it freezes up. It stays on “wait for your ipod to connect in recovery mode…”. To get it out of recovery mode, I restored my ipod in itunes. It formated/restored my ipod but I still can’t install cydia & installer, same error. Please tell me there is a way to fix this.

BTW: It’s only 8GB and now I’m down to 7gb…with factory settings. My guarantee finishes on the 9th of Febuary. I need help prior to this date otherwise I will have to go to the apple store and take advantage of the warranty, but I’m not sure if they can put my iPod touch back in 8GB.

Thanks in advance for any support!
