app-storeWhile we were all cheering at the new updates Apple announced yesterday, I’m sure there were some developers just kissing their dollars goodbye. As always, when Apple brings in new functionality, it takes a bite out of the existing market. This time round, a whole bunch of apps are set to go bye bye.

voice-recording-iphone1Voice Recording Apps
Including the big ones like Record, iTalk, and SpeakEasy, there are at least about 50 voice recorders on the App Store which will get the silent treatment.  The new voice app for the iPhone lets you record voice notes, and then share them over email or MMS. The SMS app also allows you to create voice notes and trim them down to your liking.

Notes applications
Given that most notes applications on the iPhone either touted landscape keyboard or syncing them over or both, I think it’s time to say bye bye to at least 30 of these apps. The new notes application not only lets you use the landscape keyboard (as does Mail and SMS mind you), you can also sync them over using iTunes. Add to this the new functionality of Copy-Pasting built in, Notes applications will have to evolve into mini word processors if they want to survive.

share-contactsContact Card Sharing
At least about 20 applications on the App Store were dedicated to sharing your contacts, which was previously not possible. The 3.0 OS allows you to share your contacts directly via SMS or Email. You can even receive vCards over SMS.

As with all things Apple however, we can only judge these features once we actually see them for ourselves. We all know what happened to the Flickr support in iPhoto that was supposed to crush FlickrExport. Look how that turned out!

Any more apps you’ve noticed that are now obsolete with the new functionality?

yeah… some of these that just added minor features will die. Apps that added more value should do fine… Evernote for example. Especially if they could add voice recognition to voice notes so it’d be searchable.
