Guitar Toolkit for iPhone

I recently picked up the guitar again, and I’m a little rusty with chords and all that surrounds strumming those strings. Well, I have my iPhone with me, so why not use that to get back on track.

I searched on the App Store and was surprised to find only one viable candidate to do the job. No I’m not talking about virtual guitars where you can strum strings by shaking the iPhone. I’m talking about real useful functions like tuning, chord progressions, and a metronome. Guitar Toolkit by Agile Partners seems to be the most feature rich guitar application on the iPhone, and boy was I happy I found it.

Tuning

guitar-toolkit-tunerMy brother is a professional guitar player, so when I asked him if we could tune his guitar with my iPhone, “Get that toy out of here” was his remark. After persisting, we tried tuning his electric guitar, and the results were fantastic. The app automatically detects the string you’re plucking and tells you whether you need to tighten it or loosen it. I tuned my acoustic guitar as well, which I had struggled with earlier using old school methods.

Chords

Please get this straight. I’m a horrible guitar player, and pretty much no one knows that I can even hold one straight. I have limited knowledge of chords, so when I come across something like a Sus4 or Maj7, I’m usually running around the internet searching for the way to play it. Guitar Toolkit is just fantastic, and I’m not just saying it. It shows you every possible chord under the sun, with numbers indicating which are the ideal fingers for the job. You can switch between different locations of the chords with ease, and changing them is just two taps away.

Metronome and the Fretboard

guitar-toolkit-chordsI don’t use the metronome very often, but it’s got a really good one from what I can tell. It’s not as slick as Bjango’s Beats app, but you can tap-tap-tap to gauge the tempo and then play along with the different sounds you can use. The Fretboard bit I didn’t understand, so I’ll not comment.

Complaints and Grievances

The app is kind of sluggish when switching modes. This of course won’t be a problem for 3GS owners, but for 2G iPhones it’s a bit of a drag switching between say the Metronome and Chords. My second complaint, and this is one that Adam Betts shares with me, is the icon is non standard. So off it goes alongside DocumentsToGo in the ‘bad icon corner’ of the third home screen, even though this is a definitely a Home Screen 1 worthy app.

Verdict

The app is just plain fantastic for any guitarist. It’s well supported for different tunings, bass guitars, 12 strings, and even left handed support. The user interface is beautifully crafted, with rich colours, good layout, and realistic renderings of the guitar fretboard. At $9.99, I’m pretty sure this is the app you want if amateur or professional guitaring is your kind of thing.

Does it work with a bass too?

Guitarist for 3 years now… also a student with little money (enough to buy an iPhon though). :P

I’m in the market for one of these - like you I am getting back into playing after a ten year hiatus - the turner was my worry - I have heard some awful stories about apps being really poor for tuning guitars - thanks for the article!

I’ve heard a lot of good feedback! Looks like a great app.

I teach guitar for a living and I would like to see if this is legitimately good enough to recommend to my students.

My dad is obsessed with guitars (has 5 of them :O), and this would be an awesome birthday present for him.

The app looks very nice and useful, I’d like to try it…

Thanks for the review Milind.

David Sharpe - There is full support for both 4 and 5 string Bass. We’ll be adding Ukulele, Banjo and Mandolin with the next update.

One clarification about the Fretboard. It’s primary purpose is to serve as a scales reference. You can select the tuning, key and scale to see a visual representation.

I’ve been playing guitar since I was 9 (I’m 15 now) and I’ve been looking for something good like this for a while. A free copy would be great.

This looks awesome! I just picked up a guitar over the weekend after a long time (and by long, I mean, 10 years!!!). I looked up a song online to play and found that I’ve forgotten how to play most of the chords (the m’s and the #’s). Great post!!!

I need this in my life

I’m looking forward to 1.3, which should feature ukulele tunings!

Very cool, would definitely come in handy on-the-go!

I have this app and have used it for the last six months or so and have to say that it’s genuinely useful! I use it all the time, especially for tuning. Its chord charts are really quite special, too, as are the scale charts for the different scalar modes. Well worth the money. Guitarists of the world: get this app!

I’ve been looking for a good guitar app for the iphone - looks like that one might fit the bill.

dave b July 9, 2009 at 4:10 am

looks great. Can one adjust the tuning to simulate a mandolin?

John Berry July 9, 2009 at 4:59 am guitartoolkit.com

dave b: Mandolin support is coming in the next update, which should hopefully be out in a month or so.

Nice review. I’m just an amateur, used to play in a family bluegrass band many years ago during my college days, but haven’t picked one up in a couple years, until I moved recently and unearthed my beloved old Gibson Epiphone. It is sadly out of tune, so I’d been looking for something to help me tune her up. Sounds like this would work nicely. Maybe I’ll luck up and win one :)

Cheers!

This looks like a great alternative to a chord book and has a fabulous UI. I would certainly use the chord reference and fretboard.

Um… a giveaway… sounds fun ;)

*reads again*

Erm… For a Guitar app? Sounds like fun :D

Nathan July 9, 2009 at 6:48 pm nathan-adams.net/album

This was the first app I purchased for my iPhone, and it’s been very handy. Very well designed, and the tuner has been perfect for tuning my acoustic (something my boss stomp-box tuner can’t do).

I disagree about the icon. Even though it’s non-standard, it’s still well done and doesn’t look out of place.

One thing I would love to see, is the ability for Chords to work in reverse. I often play around with odd shaped chords when writing, so it would be nice to mark the frets and for the app to tell me what the name of the chord is.

Ukulele support, alongside the Mandolin would be nice too.

Cool !!

Bikalpa Paudel July 14, 2009 at 12:32 am twitter.com/bikalpapaudel

Whoa! So all chords with their respective variations are there? How did I miss this one?

Do include me in the giveaway!

Though the tuner probably wont work on my iPod Touch as I do not have a mic for it, I’ll probably buy it, even if its just for the chords. I have an old Zoom 505 processor for tuning, metronome and other stuff.

Even people pretty good at playing the guitar don’t take the plight of learning all the chords, as far as I have seen.

Milind Alvares July 14, 2009 at 1:36 am soggysh.it

Yay! Giveaway has been done with. Winners contacted, and things sorted out. I just can’t remember the names so unless someone demands for them, we’ll leave things the way they are.

@Nathan: I hear the reverse engineering of chords is coming in the 1.3 update. Now that will be an awesome feature.

Dom July 17, 2009 at 1:35 pm domja.com

my old Musima is near impossible to tune manually. let alone the need to carry around the chord dictionary. shame about the icon, but the interface looks rather nice.
