Not too long ago, Chris made us take a quick glance at Glyphboard, Neven Mrgan’s fantastic web app that harnesses the new features in iPhone OS 3.0, giving you quick access to special unicode characters right from your home screen. Glyphboard allows you to tap and hold to copy a character to its scratchboard, or simply using that single character wherever you wish to use it. Sadly, being a web app, there was only so much it could do. While the app was also available offline, it only had a select few characters. Also, copying every character to the scratchboard was a teeny bit difficult, as tap and hold isn’t the most ideal way to do it.
If you’ve found good use of Glyphboard in the past, then Unicode is going to impress you. The app does the exact same thing as Glyphboard does, but being an app on the App Store, Unicode is able to do much more than just that. To begin with, Unicode features 7 different screens full of unicode characters, including one favorites screen as the first. Tap and hold any character from any screen to add the character to the group of favorites. Using Unicode is very easy. Tapping any character copies it to the clipboard instantaneously, while also adding it to the little text-field on the top. Tap multiple characters together and copy the bunch from the text-field with one tap. It’s that simple.
What’s more, you can even add your own characters to the app. From any application, copy any single character to the clipboard and then in Unicode, tap and hold any empty place to add the character to the app.
At 99 cents on the App Store, Unicode does one thing and does it well. If you love unicode characters, this is probably already on your iPhone.
