Post image for App Store: Some Cool ‘free’ games

app-store-free-gamesWe’ve so far given more importance to reviews of paid apps on the App Store because there’s no way for users to know how good an app is, without purchasing it. The App Store also has a lot of free content, with amazing value. Here’s a few games that caught my fancy.

Note: For App Store reviews, we won’t be warning you when a link points to iTunes. If this is annoying, please give us your feedback using our email address in the sidebar.

Tap of War

This is a must have game for beer parties (or juice parties if we’re talking about kids here). The game features a brilliant UI, where faster tapping pulls the rope towards your side.

The single player mode is boring, where you tap against a computer (which apparently gets faster with each level). Dual player is where this game shines and can provide loads of entertainment for a bunch of idiots. It could also work with intelligent people, but I didn’t find any around at the time. One should note that I won all of the tap wars against my friends, owing to my high levels of awesomeness.

The devs have also announced Tap of War Pro, which will include some more features, but the free version is mighty enough.

Finger Sprint Lite

A game that will put you in splits the moment you see it. Finger Sprint transforms your iPhone into a running track, which you ‘run on’ using two fingers. The lite version comes with a 1 metre race track, which is heavily entertaining.

The fun doesn’t last long however and we got bored of it after a few sprints against each other. And even though this game doesn’t have a multiplayer mode, this is not a game to play alone, but among a group of friends. You there, go out and make some friends, and then go get Finger Sprint. I hold the highest score in this game as well, with 5.17 seconds for the 1 metre race.

Arcade Hoops Basketball Lite

hoopsA game made for Basketball lovers and idiots alike. If you ever lost those shoot out competitions in school (by lost I mean I could not get even one in), this is a game made for you. Finally you don’t need any physical skill to throw perfect baskets.

The gameplay involes a hoop, with several balls at the bottom of your screen. You flick your finger upwards for the hand to throw the ball. There’s limited time on the clock so you have to shoot quickly.

There’s a 3 Point Hoops Basketball Lite version as well, which allows you to shoot 3 pointers. The Pro version allows you to choose different modes, global high scores, and different soundtracks, but I would say the free version is mighty enough for hoop throwing fun.

I should note that my basketball skills in the iPhone game suck just as bad as they do in real life.

Fingeric

fingeric1If you are a fan of a Frenzic like fast paced game, Fingeric offers some truly innovative gameplay. The game requires you to hone your three-finger skills, using multi touch and a clean UI to provide you with a lot of entertainment.

The game is a little difficult to understand at first, but with a little practice you will soon get addicted. Plus the juicy graphics are hard to resist. There is no Pro version, so this is the best it can get! Oh, and this game is played alone, so when those friends are busy at work, this is the game to whip out.

There’s a lot more free games and apps on the App Store. After iShoot’s success with offering Lite versions, the App Store is filled with these pseudo trial versions. Found any interesting games on the App Store? Do share!

I travel a lot and have downloaded several games to keep me busy in the airport, or on the plane. most are short games that I can stop at any time. my current favs include
Removem (I think this has a new name now, and also has a pay version)
Trace - not as easy as it looks and a lot of addictive fun.
Topple
Snowed in - I loved to play this on my pocket pc and was excited to see it in the app store
I like things like tap target and duck shoot
Snowballed
Dactyl and even paper football
I have a few more I like but cant remember if I payed for them or not.

I kick butt at Fingersprint Lite! My current highscore for the 1 meter race is 3.25 seconds! We need an overall scoreboard to keep track!

I really like Tap of War! It’s great to pass time!

I’m going to go download Fingeric and see what that’s about!
