Apple has dropped their mightiest bomb in recent times with a slew of new updates, such that it’s almost difficult to concentrate on one before you notice the other. It’s in fact awesomely weird that today’s updates were way more exciting than the recent Apple media events.
Joining the ‘newness’ that is today, the age old Apple Remote gets a facelift. Featuring a more metallic look—I presume it’s made from the same polycarbonate as the new MacBooks—the remote is now sleeker and smaller in profile. It features dark buttons for navigating. I’m not too pleased with the visuals—although it might make an impression when holding a real piece—but the button rearrangement is certainly a welcome change. They’ve now placed the Play/Pause button alongside the Menu button making it much more logical while navigating media center apps like Front Row or Plex.
Ars Technica reports that the battery compartment is now shifted to the back, hopefully avoiding the ‘flying battery syndrome’, where the silver battery would go flying across the room if you accidentally dropped the remote. Still priced at $20, and is compatible with any Mac that sports an IR receiver. New Apple Remote at the online store.
